It's a blog post....it's a feature
It's both and it's the Prodigal Beat Writer with a little something on Juan Sanchez from yesterday.
Baseball America doesn't rate Juan Sanchez as one of the top prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers' system. There is a lot between the dots, so make sure to click and read.
But the 22-year-old infielder/outfielder has definitely caught the attention of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers coaching staff.
"He loves playing the game, and it shows when he's out on the field," Rattlers manager Jeff Isom said. "I knew coming in he was going to be our utility guy up the middle."
But Isom wasn't expecting the Venezuelan to provide a key lift in an outfield that has been battered with injuries.
Over his last eight games, Sanchez has been penciled in at five positions: second base, shortstop, third base, center field and right field. He split time between third base and right field in the Rattlers' 11-1 Midwest League loss at Great Lakes on Wednesday.
"It ends up we needed an outfielder with (Erik) Miller (being injured), so we put him out there in center field, never seen him out there, he's never played out there," Isom said. "Probably now one of our better outfielders.
...
"He's been a catalyst, also, offensively at times. Just has very good baseball instincts. As I was saying earlier, he's a baseball player. And we need more guys like that."

@Great Lakes 9, Wisconsin 5: "We're swinging the bats and scoring a lot of runs," noted manager Juan Bustabad, whose Loons have outscored opponents 28-6 during their three-game win streak. "And the starting pitchers are doing a good job."
Kane County 3 @South Bend 0: "That's the way Kenny's pitched for us all season," said Kane County pitching coach Jimmy Escalante. "He did a good job of getting ahead of hitters with his fast ball and then kept them off balance with his change up."
@West Michigan 11, Peoria 7: The lineup has been shuffled out of necessity in the season's second half, but the West Michigan Whitecaps' offense continues to roll along.
Quad Cities 5 @Dayton 3:
Clinton 7 @Fort Wayne 4: Fort Wayne and Clinton combined for 12 doubles Thursday. But it was the potential double Lumberjacks center fielder Maximo Mendez prevented that helped end the TinCaps’ 15-game home winning streak. (Editor's note: Lumberjacks? Really?)
Beloit 9 @Burlington 1: "They just beat us. That's about it. Sometimes you just get beat."

It all might have worked out if home plate umpire Marcus Pattillo had called Quad Cities batter Osvaldo Morales out on strikes to end the seventh inning.Cedar Rapids 13 @Lansing 6: Jonathan Talley went 3-for-4 with two RBI on Thursday, but the Lansing Lugnuts could not recover from Cedar Rapids' six-run sixth inning
It appeared from the home team dugout at Fifth Third Field — and most other observers — that Morales struck out swinging.
It was even more clear on the video replay, but Pattillo said Morales held his bat back far enough. In other words, he didn’t completely bring his bat around his back.
Three pitches later (two were balls), Morales did fully swing, and he connected for a double that drove in two runs, breaking a 3-3 tie and giving the River Bandits a 5-3 victory over the Dragons on Thursday, July 16.

For a good cause
Fang is celebrating his 15th birthday next Friday. He wants presents, but not for him.
The gifts will be a contribution to a toy drive that will benefit children of Fox Cities families in need. Fans wishing to donate should bring a new toy to the game between the Timber Rattlers and the Dayton Dragons.Plus, a mascot kickball game at 6:00pm with over 25 mascots from area companies.
Members of The Santa Squad will be collecting toys at the main gate of Time Warner Cable Field. Donations are then divided amongst toy drives in the area to meet their specific needs. More information about The Santa Squad can be found at www.the-santa-squad.com.
Whitecaps in the spotlight....again
Man vs. Food's Adam Richman was in West Michigan last night. What do you think he was there to do?
This may be giving away the ending, but it's worth it:
It did! I don't know why there is all of that space, but it's there.
Fun fact from the article: It's the Travel Channel's policy to not speak with the media.
Considering Adam Richman, host of the Travel Channel's "Man v. Food" show, didn't sit down in Fifth Third Ballpark's competition area Wednesday night until the middle of the eighth inning to dig into the Fifth Third Burger, eating the 4-pound sandwich in a record 17 minutes or faster seemed out of the question. Is that supposed to be his last bite?...asked the guy who made so many mistakes on yesterday's Game Notes post it was heartbreakingly funny...
And consuming the nearly 4,800 calories and 300 grams of fat before the end of the West Michigan Whitecaps game -- the only way to officially join the club of those who completed the feat and received a Fifth Third Burger shirt -- didn't seem likely, either.
But Richman, known for his ability to eat large quantities of foods across the U.S., completed the task in a made-for-television-performance of 27 minutes, waving and talking to the crowd that had crammed into every possible spot along the third-base concourse to get a glimpse.
The crowd cheered before Richman sat down, shouted such things as "Eat that meat" and "Man up" while he ate and let out a huge roar when Richman, who emphasized it wasn't man vs. time but man vs. food, took his last bit.
This may be giving away the ending, but it's worth it:
He celebrated by circling the crowd, slapping high-fives and kissing three spectators.I hope this video shows up on this post...

Remembering the day when the batboy was ejected
That's the title of this article in The Hawkeye.
The July 16, 1961, edition of The Hawk Eye probably is not hanging on Bill Dowell's wall. A framed copy is not gracing the top of his desk, or mounted above his fireplace.Read on to get the whole story, but there is this little slice of life from the Three-I League:
A photocopy was hidden in the drawer of the third-base concession stand at Community Field -- until a nosy reporter found it and dredged up the past.
"Burlington Bee batboy Billy Dowell was ejected in the 11th inning Saturday night at Community Field," the article began.
It continued, "The youth got the thumb from umpire (Louis) Casciano for allegedly throwing equipment."
Forty-eight years later, Dowell and Ron Brand -- who played for the Bees in 1961 -- have a different recollection.
The two met for the first time since 1961 when Brand -- now a scout for the New York Yankees -- was at Community Field July 6. They got together and discussed what happened that day.
After Dowell left the field, the Community Field crowd was almost treated to what Brand called "a bad sight."Just go read it.
"I went in the clubhouse and Harding Peterson [the manager of the Bees who had already been tossed from the game], he's in there in his skivvies," Dowell said. "He asked me what the heck happened. I said, 'He kicked me out, too.' Hardy jumped up and he's headed out the door. Ronnie had to grab him before he ran outside in his underwear."
The Three-I League wanted to teach Dowell a lesson.
"They wanted to fine me $500 and I didn't quite make that much money in a season, so that got my attention," said Dowell, now a district court judge.

Mr. Jones
Rattlers Alum drives in winning run for American League
Adam Jones was a shortstop for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in 2004. On Tuesday, he helped the American League beat the National League 4-3 in the 2009 All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.Click the link for details on the rest of the Appleton Baseball Alumns in the Midsummer Classic.
Jones, who is an outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles now, stepped to the plate with the scored tied 3-3 in the top of the eighth inning. Curtis Granderson tripled and Victor Martinez was intentionally walked with one out to put Jones in position to give the AL a win and run their unbeaten streak to 13 years in the Midsummer Classic.
Heath Bell got up 0-2 in the count, but Jones put the ball in play with a fly ball the warning track in right field. The ball was deep enough for Granderson to score what turned out to be the winning run without a play.
Well, hello there
Good afternoon.
Bus got in at 3:45 am. You would think that the family diner down the street would be open at 5:30, but nope.
So, after a few hours of sleep, there were a few other things to work on before getting on the blog. The bus to the field is in about 20 minutes so I'll be updating from there once the equipment is set up and working.
However, I do have a quick post to, um, post before heading to Dow Diamond.

How could this possibly be related to Midwest League baseball?

Judge lets automaker drop 54 contracts in move to slash costs in advertising
How could this possibly be related to Midwest League baseball?
Among the contracts that will be terminated effective June 22 are the naming rights of Oldsmobile Park. GM agreed to pay the city of Lansing $1.5 million when it signed a 15-year contract in 1995. The stadium is home to the Lansing Lugnuts, a Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. A spokesman for Mayor Virg Bernero did not return a call seeking comment Monday.Note that the dateline for the story is July 14.
Here is the foresight of GM...from the Lansing State Journal article...
Five years ago, GM had toyed with the idea of changing the name of the park. The automaker had discontinued the Oldsmobile brand and GM had spoken to the city about giving the park a new name.In hindsight....they may have decided on another path.
It eventually decided against it.
Wait...What?
One of the opposing players to have made an impression this season has been Gustavo Nunez of the West Michigan Whitecaps. That makes this story, um, interesting.
The Detroit Tigers have suspended West Michigan Whitecaps starting shortstop Gustavo Nunez indefinitely for "conduct detrimental to the organization."They will re-evaluate at the end of the week.
The Whitecaps' leadoff hitter this season, Nunez is fifth in the Midwest League in hitting at .328 and is third in steals with 37.
This again
Every couple of years, this story pops up...
Could Minor League Baseball Be Coming to Dubuque?
Alternate headline...Could Minor League Baseball NOT be coming to Dubuque?
A few key points from that video above...
Also...and again...this would seem to be a pretty important fact.
The Battle Creek franchise was the one that was supposed to move into that stadium. The levy was turned down and the Battle Cats/Yankees/Devil Rays are now in Midland, Michigan.
Look I really don't want to be this demotivational poster and I would be happy to make a journey to Dubuque for a Midwest League game, but unless there are two new expansion teams in the works for major league baseball and that creates a need for two more Class-A teams, I'll check back in a few years to see if this has made any progress.
Could Minor League Baseball Be Coming to Dubuque?
Alternate headline...Could Minor League Baseball NOT be coming to Dubuque?
A few key points from that video above...
"We are going to have some form of minor league baseball in this town. I can't tell you when but as soon as I can make it happen, we will make it happen," says Joe Chlapaty. Chlapaty is a prominent business leader from Ohio. In the past several years he's given millions of dollars to his alma mater, the University of Dubuque. His next mission is to bring minor league baseball to Dubuque. "The challenge we have right now is not building a stadium, it's finding a team we can move to Dubuque that's part of the Midwest league."That would seem to be a rather large stumbling block.
He checked and says there are currently no teams in that league for sale.
He's also checking out teams in the Pioneer League.Pioneer League? Really? I'm going to guess that they meant to say Frontier League. Because the Helena, Montana to Dubuque, Iowa road trip will be fantastic for the Pioneer League.
Also...and again...this would seem to be a pretty important fact.
You might remember that in 2003, Dubuque voters turned down a tax levy to build a minor league stadium. Chlapaty says, under his plan, private funding would pay for everything.
The Battle Creek franchise was the one that was supposed to move into that stadium. The levy was turned down and the Battle Cats/Yankees/Devil Rays are now in Midland, Michigan.

Midwest League Action: Games of July 13, 2009
Complete Scoreboard
@Wisconsin 5, South Bend 2: “We do have to scratch runs across, find a way. We’re not swinging the bats exceptionally well right now, but we’re finding ways to get the runs in.”
@Peoria 5, Fort Wayne 2: It would be nice to say that Chicago Cubs prospect Kevin Hart helped the Peoria Chiefs beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-2 on Monday. It would be nice, but it wouldn’t necessarily be totally true.
Great Lakes 8 @Kane County 0: Connect Four ranks as the board game of choice in the Cougars’ clubhouse, enjoying a prominent spot on a table next to a worn deck of cards.
@Cedar Rapids 6, Dayton 2: Kernels version | Dragons version
@Quad Cities 5, Clinton 4 (12 innings): "When a game goes into extra innings, I think guys do tend to kick it into another gear," said Jon Edwards, who tied the game with a two-run homer in the eighth and then opened the 12th with a single to left.
@Burlington 7, Lansing 4: If Jim Gabella could see just one inning like this every game, he would be one happy manager.
West Michigan 7 @Beloit 3: At this point in the 2009 Beloit Snappers season, counting wins and losses is probably not the appropriate thing to do.

"I want to play center field for the Milwaukee Brewers," Cain said in a quiet but determined tone. "Who knows when that would happen? But I want to make it happen as soon as possible."That is the last quote from the Prodigal Beat Writer's story on Lorenzo Cain.
Go read it all. I'll be back later this afternoon.

July 13, 2009: Game Notes
ABOUT SUNDAY: Corey Kemp hit a three run homer and Dan Merklinger allowed one run over six innings to send the Rattlers to a 5-1 win over the Silver Hawks.
TWO OUT BINGO: All five Wisconsin runs scored after there were two outs.
SINCE… Kemp’s homer was in the third inning. There were two outs and nobody on base when Pete Fatse and Lorenzo Cain drew walks. Kemp lifted his homer over the left field wall for a 3-0 Rattlers lead. Kemp had not homered since May 26 at Dayton. It was his first homer at Time Warner Cable Field since April 29.
ABOUT THAT HOMER: That Kemp blast was #24 in game #49 at home for the Timber Rattlers this season. In 2008, Wisconsin had 27 homers in 62 games at Time Warner Cable Field.
ANYWAY, ANYHOW: The Rattlers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The sacks were still full with two outs and no runs in for Wisconsin. Then, Fatse and Cain drew walks to force in runs and give the Rattlers a 5-0 lead.
DIAL M FOR MERKLINGER: The Rattlers starting pitcher allowed one run over six innings. He struck out six and walked two. The only run he gave up was on a two out RBI single by Rossmel Perez in the top of the sixth. In the second half, Merklinger is 2-0 with a save and 1.74ERA and 21 strikeouts in 20-1/3 innings.
MEADOW’S LAND: Daniel Meadows relieved Merklinger in the seventh and allowed one hit, struck out two, and walked one over the final three innings to get his second save of the season.
HE’S GOT VERSITILITY: Juan Sanchez made the start at third base yesterday. In the last six games, Sanchez has started at third, second, right (twice), center, and shortstop.
FIVE BY FIVE BY FIVE: Sanchez, Derrick McPhearson, and Michael Vass each had a hit yesterday. All three extended their hitting streaks to five games. For McPhearson and Vass those are season-high hitting streaks.
LAWRIE’S DAY: Rattlers second baseman Brett Lawrie went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the XM Futures at St. Louis on Sunday. His double led off the seventh inning and sparked a four run rally for the World team on the way to a 7-5 win. He is in transit today and is not expected back in time for the game.
CAIN WATCH: The Milwaukee Brewers sent outfielder Lorenzo Cain to the Rattlers to work his way back from injury. Yesterday, he was 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and his first RBI with Wisconsin. He is 5-for-23 with seven walks in eight games with the Rattlers.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are the defending Eastern Division champions of the Midwest League. They finished the first half of the season with a record of 27-41. In the second half, the Silver Hawks are currently 8-9 and they are in third place in the Eastern Division. However, since the top two teams in the East this half already are in the playoffs, South Bend holds the top second half playoff spot in that division by two games over Dayton and Great Lakes. The Silver Hawks are currently on a ten game road trip. They are 6-3 on the first nine games after taking three out of four at Lansing and two out of three at Beloit.
SEASON SERIES: The Silver Hawks lead 3-2. They were 2-1 in a series at Coveleski Regional Stadium May 8 through May 10. Wisconsin lost game one 6-1 and game two 11-2. The Rattlers salvaged the final game of the series with a 4-1 win.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .242 as a team. They have scored 357 runs (4.1/game) and hit 42 home runs. The Silver Hawks are hitting .247 as a team. They have scored 320 runs (3.8/game) and hit 22 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 3.88 while allowing a total of 382 runs (4.5/game). South Bend pitchers have a team ERA of 4.07 while allowing 403 runs (4.7/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 102 errors. The Hawks defense has committed 107 errors. Wisconsin is 29-20 at home this season. South Bend is 17-30 on the road this season.
SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER: RHP Ryan Cook was the 27th round pick of the Diamondbacks in the 2008 draft out of Southern California. He went 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA in seven starts for the Yakima Bears, the Northwest League affiliate of the Diamondbacks in 2008. In 2009, he is 6-7 with a 4.03 ERA in 14 starts for the Silver Hawks. Cook has been very streaky in 2009. He won his first five decisions. Then, he lost his next seven starts. Cook won his start prior to today to snap the losing streak. On July 8 at Beloit, he allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings with a walk and eight strikeouts. Today is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

July 12, 2009: Game Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The South Bend Silver Hawks beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-1. Randy Rodriguez pitched 8-1/3 innings and allowed one run for his first win since June 2. Nelson Gomez doubled in a pair of runs in a three-run third inning to give the Hawks enough for the win.
ONE MISTEP: Rattlers starting pitcher Evan Frederickson allowed three runs on four hits in the second inning. In his previous start against the Silver Hawks on May 8, Frederickson allowed five runs in the game. All of those runs scored in the second inning.
WHO IS RANDY RODRIGUEZ? Rodriguez had lost six consecutive starts before last night. In the game against the Rattlers, Rodriguez gave up seven hits, struck out four. The Hawks defense turned a pair of double plays for him and from the fourth through the eighth, Rodriguez retired 14 of 15 batters faced.
RALLY TIME: The Rattlers loaded the bases against Rodriguez in the ninth inning. Juan Sanchez singled to start the frame. One out later, Lorenzo Cain singled and Corey Kemp walked.
HOSED: South Bend closer TJ Hose entered the game and hit Brock Kjeldgaard to force in Sanchez with a run for Wisconsin. But, Hose struck out Martin Maldonado and got John Delaney on a grounder to third to end the game.
MISSED AGAIN: A Rattler win last night would have given them a 44-41 mark for their overall record. That would have put the Rattlers three games over the .500 mark for the first time since they were 3-0 at the beginning of the season. That was the second time this week the Rattlers missed on a chance to go three above par.
PERALTA’S NIGHT: Rattler reliever Wily Peralta tossed three scoreless innings and struck out three hitters. He has 89 strikeouts this season and is second in the Midwest League in that category.
ON LEAVE: Rattlers second baseman Brett Lawrie will not be available today. He is playing in the XM Futures game in St. Louis today. The game is scheduled for a 1:00pm CDT start time at Busch Stadium.
CAIN WATCH: The Milwaukee Brewers sent outfielder Lorenzo Cain to the Rattlers to work his way back from injury. Last night, he was 2-for-4 with a double and a single. That double was the first extra base hit for Cain with Wisconsin. He is 5-for-21 with five walks and a run scored in seven games with the Rattlers.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are the defending Eastern Division champions of the Midwest League. They finished the first half of the season with a record of 27-41. In the second half, the Silver Hawks are currently 8-8 and they are in third place in the Eastern Division. However, since the top two teams in the East this half already are in the playoffs, South Bend holds the top second half playoff spot in that division by two games over Dayton and Great Lakes. The Silver Hawks are currently on a ten game road trip. They are 7-2 on the first eight games after taking three out of four at Lansing and two out of three at Beloit.
SEASON SERIES: The Silver Hawks lead 3-1.
They have scored 352 runs (4.1/game) and hit 41 home runs. The Silver Hawks are hitting .248 as a team. They have scored 319 runs (3.8/game) and hit 22 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 3.91 while allowing a total of 381 runs (4.4/game). South Bend pitchers have a team ERA of 4.05 while allowing 398 runs (4.7/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 102 errors. The Hawks defense has committed 107 errors. Wisconsin is 28-20 at home this season. South Bend is 17-29 on the road this season.
NOT FAR TO GO: AJ Pollock was the number one pick of the Diamondbacks in the 2009 draft. Arizona selected the Notre Dame outfielder with the 17th selection overall selection. Pollock was the Cape Cod League MVP in the summer of 2008 and played for the Irish against the Silver Hawks in an exhibition game at Coveleski Regional Stadium before the start of the Midwest League season.
SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER: LHP Wade Miley was selected by the Diamondbacks with a supplemental first round pick in the 2008 draft out of Southeastern Louisiana. Miley made his professional debut in the Northwest League for Yakima and appeared as a reliever in seven games. He went 1-1 and struck out 11 batters while walking five. Miley, the #5 prospect in the Diamondbacks organization, is 3-6 with a 4.24 ERA for the Silver Hawks this season. In his start prior to today, he had a no decision at Lansing on July 7. The Lugnuts got to him for nine hits over seven innings, but Miley allowed two runs and struck out four. The Rattlers beat Miley at Coveleski Stadium on May 10. Wisconsin scored four runs on six hits over eight innings for the win. Miley struck out four Rattlers in that game and walked one.
Meet the new guy

Hi. My name is Edgar the Egret of Excuses.
Mehring asked me to say that he woke up late and has been flying around the stadium since getting in today. And he still hasn't had his traditional five-course pre-game meal or filled out his scorebook....He's on the air in about an hour...So.....
No regular posting...Most of that will be up later today...like after the game. But, the regular stuff..Game Notes...Starting Pitcher...Starting Lineup...that will be up shortly.
The rest will be up later....Unless he's playing on-line poker. Don't worry. He'll bust out in about 20 minutes.

July 11, 2009: Game Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-2. Brett Lawrie homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Then, the Rattlers took advantage of four West Michigan errors to go on to the win. Cody Adams was the winning pitcher in relief of Dave Bush and Brandon Ritchie picked up his first save as a Rattler with two scoreless innings.
WILD START: West Michigan starting pitcher Brandon Hamilton walked four batters in the first inning. Brock Kjeldgaard drew the final walk of the frame to force in the first run for Wisconsin.
THE LINE: Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dave Bush made his rehab start last night. He pitched 4-2/3 innings, allowed one unearned run on four hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out five.
LONG ARM OF THE LAW: Juan Sanchez threw out a runner at the plate last night. That was the tenth outfield assist of the season for Sanchez.
BIG FLY: Lawrie’s homer was his first since June 5 and it was his ninth of the season. The home run was a two-out solo homer to left.
FILE THIS AWAY FOR LATER…MAYBE: Lawrie hit his homer off Victor Larez last night. Lawrie also hit a homer against Larez on May 30 at West Michigan. That homer was a three-run shot with two outs in the eighth inning to put the Rattlers up 4-3. Those are the only two at bats Lawrie has had against Larez.
ON LEAVE: Lawrie will not be available tonight. He is traveling to the XM Futures game in St. Louis. The game will be played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis tomorrow at 1:00pm CDT.
MR. A: Adams won his second straight decision. He allowed one run on four hits over 2-1/3 innings to move his record to 3-5.
RITCHIE RICH: Ritchie entered the game with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning with the Rattlers leading 5-2. Ritchie struck out Jordan Lennerton on three pitches. Ritchie ended the inning by getting Ben Guez, who had homered against Adams in his previous at bat, to ground into an inning ending double play. Ritchie pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
END OF THE DAAAAAAYYYYYY! Peter Fatse went hitless for the first time in ten completed games he has played with the Timber Rattlers. Technically he has tied Sanchez and Erik Miller for the longest hitting streak on the team this season at nine games. But, he is 0-for-2 in the game at Burlington that was suspended in the sixth inning on July 7. If he does not get a hit in that game, his streak would have ended at seven games. If he does get a hit when that game restarts in August, Fatse will have the longest hitting streak on the team at 10 games.
CAIN WATCH: The Milwaukee Brewers sent outfielder Lorenzo Cain to the Rattlers to work his way back from injury. Last night, Cain was 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. He is 3-for-15 with five walks and a run scored in six games with the Rattlers.

A big night for the Rattlers
Here is some of the media coverage of the Dave Bush appearance with the Rattlers last night.
From the PC:
Dan Powers of the PC has a photo gallery and this one is my favorite.

Fox 11 had this story on the leadup to the night
And this is the only other Bush song that I know.
From the PC:
Traffic snaked all the way back from North Casaloma to U.S. 41 as 5,433 fans came to see Dave Bush make the first Brewers rehab start in a black and maroon uniform. And the crowd didn't leave disappointed. There is a video at the link that does not have an embed code.
The 29-year-old right hander looked solid by striking out five in 4 2/3 in the prescribed 55 pitches. He struck out the side in the second on 77 and 67 mph breaking balls before finishing off the inning with an 87 mph fastball.
"It felt good," said Bush, who has been on the disabled list since June 23 with a micro tear of the right triceps. "I haven't pitched to a hitter in about three weeks, so I was excited to get back on the mound in a game situation."

A scouting report
John Sickels of MinorLeagueBall.com was at a few games of the series in Burlington and he put together a few thoughts on the Rattlers he saw.
Here are a few of those jottings.
First up, the pitching tandem going tonight for the Rattlers.
Here are a few of those jottings.
First up, the pitching tandem going tonight for the Rattlers.
Evan Frederickson, LHP: Supplemental first round pick out of the University of San Francisco in 2008. Big huge guy, listed 6-6, 240. Pitched three innings of relief on the sixth. Fastball ranged between 88 and 93 MPH, with lots of movement. Also had a big breaking hard curveball. He had problems commanding both pitches, due to mechanical problems; his delivery wasn't the same from pitch to pitch, hampering his command. 4.55 ERA with 55/42 K/BB in 59 innings this year, with 61 hits. You have to like the arm strength and his size, but he needs a lot of refinement.and
Wily Peralta, RHP: Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2006. Peralta pitched four innings on the sixth, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He had the best stuff of anyone in the series, hitting a consistent 93-95 MPH. Scouts told me they'd seen him as high as 98 earlier in the year. He has a decent slider, but his changeup needs work, and his overall command is erratic. There's some effort in his delivery, and that (plus the changeup issue) may make him a reliever in the long run, though he definitely has enough stuff to close if the bullpen is his eventual destination. 3.48 ERA with an 86/22 K/BB in 67 innings this year, 59 hits. . .excellent K/IP mark reflects the plus stuff.Plus:
Brett Lawrie, 2B: 2008 first round pick, hitting .264/.351/.459 with 14 steals this year. He had a frustrating series, going 1-for-9, hitting a couple of noisy fly ball outs, but also hitting a couple of foul balls that would have been in the stands in most parks, but were outs in Burlington. This left him visibly frustrated, loudly cursing his luck in the dugout to where everyone in the stadium can hear. Scouts weren't surprised, saying he has an "intense" personality. Lawrie hits from an open stance, makes a good effort to work the count, handled both fastballs and breaking stuff well, and had the best bat speed of anyone in the series. His play at second base was OK; he caught what he got to, and showed decent range to his left, but his range to the right was less impressive. He doesn't LOOK anything like a second baseman, due to his thick strong legs, and the scouting consensus among observers is that he'll end up in left field eventually. Despite his muscular build, his running speed is above average.click the link up top for the rest.
Streak ends
Jamie McOwen's run at history ended last night.
After Modesto Nuts closer Craig Baker blew one final fastball past James McOwen ['07], the High Desert Mavericks outfielder didn't stomp back to the dugout in disgust.Congratulations on a great run.
Sure, it was his last chance to extend his California League-record hitting streak to 46 games, but he didn't spike his helmet. And he didn't break down in tears.
McOwen turned toward the dugout and thought, "Wow, he really gassed me up right there." Then he took a minute to tell fellow outfielder Carlos Peguero to be ready for Baker's fastball because, while he felt disappointed, he knew he needed to do what he could to help his team win a game.
Brown on managing
This has been in my inbox for awhile and since Daren Brown was the manager of Bobby Livingston, might as well bring it up now.
Rainiers’ Daren Brown on Managing
Rainiers’ Daren Brown on Managing
TW: Do you have team meetings?Head over to the rest of the Tacoma Weekly story.
Brown: I’m not big on meetings. I tend to have a meeting when I have something to say. Some teams have them all the time. I’m not okay with not playing well, because if you don’t play well you’re not going to win a whole lot. I’m pretty basic. You have to be patient, but at the same time, you have to let them know what you expect or you may not get it.
TW: In your opinion, what are the most important attributes of a good ballplayer?
Brown: Work ethic. If they don’t have a good work ethic, regardless of talent and ability, they may never make a big-league club. You can’t judge how big someone’s heart is, how much they want to compete and win, regardless of ability. Scouts and other coaches can’t see work ethic, but if players have that they give themselves a chance.
You saw that right

Lansing @ Quad Cities:
After experiencing heavy thunderstorms all morning and into the early afternoon, the River Bandits grounds crew removed the tarp around 2:00 p.m. and worked extensively on the field up to - and even past - game time. But 54 minutes after scheduled first pitch, umpires Nick Mahrley and Marcus Patillo deemed the field conditions unplayable and officially cancelled the game. Since it was the final scheduled meeting between Quad Cities and Lansing in 2009, no makeup game will be planned.
