Billy. Freakin'. Martin. Manager. Detroit. Tigers.
BaseballLibrary.com has a day-by-day for the entire 1972 season of the Tigers. The thing I found interesting was that Detroit led the AL East from July 9 through August 10. Then, they scuffled along trading the divisional lead with the Baltimore Orioles.
Detroit briefly fell to third place on September 3 as the Red Sox got hot and blew by both the O's and the Tigers. Detroit was still in second place by 1-1/2 games on September 30. But, they beat the Brewers on October 1 for their third win in a row to move to within 1/2 game of Boston.
Then, the Tigers won the first two games of a series with the Red Sox to clinch the title and get into the ALCS against Oakland.
