The Mets defeat the Cardinals, 6-2, in the opener of the NLCS behind the pitching of Mike Hampton. Todd Zeile and Jay Payton hit 9th-inning homers for New York, whose pitchers had their streak of 26 consecutive scoreless ended by two unearned runs in the 9th.

Six years later, the Cards and Mets meet in Game One of the NLCS.

1948
In Boston, the
Cleveland Indians nip the Braves 4-3 to take the WS in 6 games. Rookie lefty Gene Bearden is the pitching hero in relief.

Fifty-eight years later, the Indians are still looking for another World Series title.

1900
The AL announces that in 1901 it intends to put a team in Baltimore led by John McGraw, and one in Washington. But they pledge to stay out of Philadelphia and St. Louis unless the NL starts a fight.

The NL must have started a fight. The A's were in Philly for 1901 and the Milwaukee Brewers moved to St. Louis for 1902.
