Washington Nationals: How Close?

This is a series of posts that will look at the closest Major League Baseball franchises have been to winning their last pennant and last World Series Championship. Four teams have won neither a World Series nor a pennant. Some teams have won a pennant, but no World Series. Many have won both, but its been a while since their last.

This post is about the Washington Nationals. I'll have a post on the Montreal Expos next.

In their first two seasons in Washington, the Nationals were 81-81 (last NL East, 9 games behind the Atlanta Braves) and 71-91 (last NL East, 26 games behind the New York Mets).

This past season, Washington started 1-8 and they ended the year at 73-89 for a fourth place finish 16 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.

Based on this cursory look, the answer to Washington Nationals: How Close?

April 17, 2005. 8-4, 1st place NL East, 2 games ahead of Atlanta, Florida, New York, and Philadelphia.
