May 9, 2009: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Silver Hawks defeated the Timber Rattlers 6-1. South Bend scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to give Trevor Harden enough support for his fifth win of the season.

TOP OF THE SECOND: Wisconsin took the early lead with a run in the top of the second inning. Corey Kemp drew a leadoff walk. He was still at first with two outs. Rattler catcher Sean McCraw worked the count to 3-2 against Harden. Kemp was running on the payoff pitch and McCraw’s double down the right field line was enough to send Kemp home with the run and a 1-0 advantage.

NO SACRIFICE: That RBI for McCraw was the first time this season he has driven in a run with a hit. He had knocked in his previous two runs with sacrifice flies.

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND: Rattler starting pitcher Evan Frederickson gave up five runs in the bottom of the second inning. There were four hits, two errors, a wild pitch, and a walk in the frame. The run scoring plays were on a throwing error by Frederickson, a wild pitch with the bases loaded, a two-run single by Alfredo Marte, and an RBI double by Justin Parker.

TAKING THE FIFTH: Harden allowed two hits and three base runners over his final five innings of work to keep the Rattlers off the scoreboard. Harden has won five straight decisions. He also leads the Midwest League in wins (5) and innings pitched (37-2/3).

ALMOST DOUBLE: The Timber Rattlers were charged with three more errors last night. In the first eight games of May, the Timber Rattlers have committed 16 errors (2.0 per game). For the 19 games in April, Wisconsin defenders were charged with 24 errors (1.3/game).

TREND SPOTTING: Wisconsin has played two error-free games in May. They are 2-0 in those games. When the Rattlers commit at least one miscue in the field this month, they are 0-6.

NOW THIS IS JUST WEIRD: Rattler first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard went 0-for-3 with a walk and three strikeouts last night. That ended Kjeldgaard’s hitting streak at two games. Kjeldgaard has had seven two-game hitting streaks this season. But, he has never had a three-game hitting streak in 2009.

FAMILY TIES: Silver Hawk outfielder Brendan Duffy is the brother of current Milwaukee Brewer outfielder Chris Duffy.

FAMILY TIES II: Silver Hawk third baseman Justin Parker is the brother of Diamondback pitching prospect Jarrod Parker. Jarrod Parker was 12-5 for the Silver Hawks in 2008 and was rated as the #1 prospect in the Arizona organization by Baseball America.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The South Bend Silver Hawks are the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are the defending Midwest League Eastern Division Champions. South Bend finished the season with a 76-63 record. They defeated West Michigan and Dayton in the playoffs before losing in the Finals to the Burlington Bees. Mark Haley is back for his fifth season as the manager of the Silver Hawks. South Bend is off to a 15-13 start in 2009. In their most recent series, the Hawks swept the Cedar Rapids Kernels in a three game series at Coveleski Regional Stadium.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .245 as a team. They have scored 110 runs (4.1/game) and hit 16 home runs. The Hawks are hitting .251 as a team. They have scored 131 runs (4.7/game) and hit 10 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.53 while allowing a total of 151 runs (5.6/game). South Bend pitchers have a team ERA of 3.76 while allowing 114 runs (4.1/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 40 errors. The Silver Hawks defense has committed 29 errors. Wisconsin is 0-8 in road games this season. The Hawks are 8-3 at The Cove this season.

SOUTH BEND STARTING PITCHER: RHP Brett Moorhouse was a 9th round pick of the Diamondbacks in the 2008 draft out of Indian River Community College. He split time with Yakima of the Northwest League and Missoula of the Pioneer League in his first professional season. Moorhouse was a combined 1-4 with an ERA of 8.75 with 13 walks and 22 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched. In his start prior to this afternoon, Moorhouse took the loss against Kane County on May 4. He gave up two runs on five hits over 5-1/3 innings while walking two and striking out six. Today is the first time Moorhouse will face the Timber Rattlers. This is also the first time he will face an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
