Vacation slides for the next few posts. I had a traveling companion this time around. Mainly to prove that I went where I said that I went and didn't pull someone else's vacation photos off the internet.

I mean, do you know anyone else that would take a Cal Ripken, Sr. Bobblehead on vacation? Don't answer that.

At the beginning, I guess. The beginning of the Midwest League Playoffs. It was almost a month ago, but everyone needs a starting point.

I didn't do predictions, but here is how I thought the MWL playoffs for 2007 would go....

WESTERN DIVISION 1st round:
Cedar Rapids over Clinton (WRONG)
Beloit over Quad Cities (Right)

EASTERN DIVISION 1st round:
Dayton over South Bend (WRONG)
West Michigan over Lansing (Right)

DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Cedar Rapids over Beloit (WRONG)
West Michigan over Dayton (Half-right)

MWL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES:
Cedar Rapids over West Michigan (WRONG)

It didn't quite turn out that way.

'Caps repeat in Midwest League

The West Michigan Whitecaps won their second straight Midwest League championship Saturday, using an eight-run fifth inning to defeat the Beloit Snappers, 11-5, in Game 4 of the Finals.

Michael Bertram had three hits and two RBIs and Scott Sizemore went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Whitecaps, who won their fifth title in 14 years in the league. The only other franchise with more championships is the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, who have won seven over 45 years, including their time as the Appleton Foxes.

Whitecaps capture another crown

BELOIT, Wis. -- For the West Michigan Whitecaps, it's one for the thumb.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Midwest League Championship series the Whitecaps were taken to a fifth and deciding game Saturday night by the Beloit Snappers.

And the best team during the season proved they were the best team in the playoffs, capturing their fifth MWL Champion in the franchise's 14th season with an 11-5 victory over the Snappers, winning the best-of-five series, 3-2.

The Whitecaps became the the first team since 1984 to win back-to-back MWL titles, a feat the Appleton Foxes, renamed the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, accomplished in 1982, '83 and '84.

Thanks to the wildest inning (the fifth) this season, the Whitecaps scored a season-high eight runs on seven hits and took advantage of five Beloit errors to take control for good.

So...congratulations to the Whitecaps.
