Midwest League Action: Games of May 9, 2009

Complete scoreboard:

@South Bend 11, Wisconsin 2: Ramon Ramirez didn't hit any triples in 321 at bats last season for South Bend. Saturday afternoon, the Silver Hawks' first baseman blasted two triples, and triggered a season-high offensive onslaught as South Bend whipped Wisconsin

Peoria 7, @Fort Wayne 1: “We always want to try to capitalize on the first scoring opportunity, and we didn’t do that,” manager Doug Dascenzo said. “Maybe it could have been a different outcome, because we know this game is played on momentum.”

Cedar Rapids 15, @Quad Cities 6;
@Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 2 (8 innings): "I really hadn't thought about it at all and all of a sudden, it was like, ‘All I need is a triple for the cycle' so I went for it," said Jacobo, who went 5-for-5 in the Kernels' 15-6 win in the completion of a game suspended Friday because of rain.

Clinton 6, @West Michigan 2 (15 innings): It seemed like the West Michigan Whitecaps' game against the Clinton LumberKings Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark lasted forever.

From the same game:
West Michigan Whitecaps outfielder Chao-Ting Tang was hit in the face by a throw from Clinton LumberKings shortstop Terry Serrano Saturday night in the seventh inning of their Midwest League game at Fifth Third Ballpark.
@Dayton 7, Kane County 5:
You don’t get many big-time players out of the 44th round of baseball’s annual first-year player draft.

You get afterthoughts and the children of the friends of someone in the front office, players with little chance to advance to the majors, given $1,000 or $2,000 bonuses and a ticket to dream away the summer.

And sometimes you get Kevin Coddington.
Beloit 8, @Lansing 3: "They did a lot of things right tonight," McCullough said of Beloit.

Burlington 17, @Great Lakes 12: Saturday was a great night at Dow Diamond — for hitters, at least.
