1987
Free agent Andre Dawson signs a one-year contract with the Cubs for the bargain-basement price of $650,000. Dawson, who had offered to sign a contract with the dollar amount left blank just so he could play on the natural grass at Wrigley Field and save his fragile knees, will hit 49 home runs and win the National League MVP Award this season.
He would win the MVP for the last place Cubs.
1973
In an exhibition game with the Pirates, the Twins' Larry Hisle becomes the first designated hitter in ML history. Hisle makes the new AL rule look good by collecting two home runs and seven RBI.
Take that, Ron Blomberg.
1890
The NL releases a schedule with 10 teams, including the Brooklyn and Cincinnati franchises formerly in the AA. Since the NL is expected to trim back down to eight teams, the release of this schedule is seen as a ruse to throw off the PL.
Not to mention the National League fans.
