How about the minor league M's

The Yuma Sun has a couple of game stories on minor league games out in Arizona. Greg Halman ('07) is the focus of this one:

Greg Halman has played enough in Everett, Wash. and wants to move on to Wisconsin or California.

After his clutch home run Saturday in an exhibition between Seattle and San Diego minor leaguers, he may get his wish.

The Seattle designated hitter, trying to earn a spot on a long-season Single-A team, hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning of the Mariners' 5-2 win at Desert Sun Stadium.

"We came out here to win although it was for the fans," Halman said. "But we were out here to win. We played hard and I think we did our job."

With the game tied at two in the top of the seventh, Anthony Phillips drew a leadoff walk for Seattle, then Padre pitcher Chris Perez hit Dan Carroll. After Gavin Dickey struck out, Halman sent the first pitch he saw over the left-center fence.

How about other ex-Rattlers?

Eddie Hernandez had three hits, a run and an RBI for the Mariners. Jair Hernandez, Geraldo Avila and Alex Liddi also had multi hit efforts for the Mariners as eight of the nine Seattle starters had a hit. Shawn Kelly pitched two perfect innings of relief for the win.

Gavin Dickey ('07) gets a look in this story and baseball isn't the lede.

Gavin Dickey, who was on display at the Future Stars game is no new-comer to the spotlight.

While attending the University of Florida, he not only played baseball, but was also a quarterback, running back and wide receiver for the football program.

"It's an amazing experience to be able to play football in front of 95,000 fans," said Dickey. "It was there that I learned how to play in front of crowds , having that experience has helped me to mentally calm down no matter what sport I'm playing."

The bar was set high for Dickey coming out of high school in 2001 where he was named the State of Florida's Gatorade player of the year as well as being named to the USA Today's National Super 25 team.

Unfortunately for Dickey, he was stuck being number two to Florida starter Chris Leak, who is currently a back-up for the Chicago Bears.

But, he helped the Gators make it to the College World Series, was a 12th round draft pick of the M's, and made it to Appleton.

In 2007, his first full season as a pro, Dickey hit .243 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 77 games for the Wisconsin Single-A affiliate for the Mariners.

Dickey showed off his speed in full force at Saturday's game against the Padres. He got the Mariners started off in the first inning with an infield hit, stole second and then scored from there on an Eddie Hernandez base hit. Showing how quickly small-ball done right can score a run.

"I'm looking to have a big year this year," said Dickey. "I just need to jump off on the right foot and hopefully in a couple years I can be up there at the show."
