From Ryno to what's his name?
New Peoria Chiefs manager Marty Pevey knows he will be in an unenviable position when the Midwest League season starts in April. One other note on the Chiefs:
'I know who was there the last two years,' Pevey said Thursday. 'Those are some pretty big shoes to fill.'
Pevey was referring to Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg, who managed the Chiefs the last two seasons.
Unlike Sandberg, who started his managerial career when he got the Class A Peoria assignment in the Chicago Cubs organization, Pevey is a veteran minor-league skipper.
He spent the last 13 seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, working his way up to the major league club as first base coach for two years and third base coach the first half of last season.
'It will be different (working for another organization), but I'm looking forward to it,' Pevey said. 'It's a new challenge.'
The Chiefs are still in the process of selling naming rights to what was formerly known as O'Brien Field.Vonachen said there is still a 'handful' of companies in the mix.
The O'Brien Automotive Team decided not to extend its agreement when it expired at the end of the 2008 season. The economic downturn has not played a role in the process, according to Vonachen. 'As (companies) get looking at it, it's a good value,' Vonachen said.
