The 5-time, 5-time, 5-time, 5-time, 5-time Midwest League Champion West Michigan Whitecaps
have their manager for 2009.
Joe DePastino called the West Michigan Whitecaps' managerial job one of the best in all of minor league baseball.
Good thing DePastino feels that way. The Detroit Tigers announced today he will return for a second season as the manager of the Whitecaps, the Tigers' low-Class A minor league affiliate.
DePastino, 35, guided West Michigan to 72-65 overall record and a spot in the Midwest League playoffs in 2008, in his first season as a professional manager.
That is from the Grand Rapids Press.
This is from the Whitecaps website. The "joke" that follows is not mine.
The West Michigan Whitecaps, in conjunction with the Detroit Tigers, announced the Whitecaps’ 2009 coaching staff today. All three of the 2008 coaches will return, with Joe DePastino at the helm and Benny Distefano and Mark Johnson returning as hitting and pitching coaches, respectively.
DePastino is returning for his second season as the Whitecaps manager. In 2008, he led the team to a 72-65 overall record, the ninth best in the team’s 15-year history, and earned a trip to the Midwest League playoffs for the 12th time in team history. The Whitecaps lost in the first round of the playoffs to South Bend.
Ninth best? Out of 15 seasons? Well, it is top 10.
