APPLETON FOXES 000 000 041 - 5 7 1
KENOSHA TWINS..000 000 010 - 1 2 1
From the article in the June 3 Post-Crescent:
A lengthy controversy punctuated Appleton’s rally in the eighth inning.Twins starter Alan Sontag was not the same. He gave up two singles, the second an RBI single by Troy Thomas to break a scoreless tie.
Noberto Martin led off the big inning with a walk and moved to second on Mike Taylor’s single. When Kent Torve missed the ball on a bunt attempt, catcher Greg Hill fired to shortstop Joey Aragon covering second base. Aragon put the tag on Martin, who was called out.
Appleton manager Sal Rende challenged umpire Kevin Daugherty’s call, claiming Martin was tagged while on the base. Rende was about to end the argument when several of his players began shouting at Daughtery. Plate umpire Chris Jacksa ejected 2 Foxes from the dugout, bringing Rende back into the act. Rende also was ejected but kept arguing with Jacksa before finally leaving the field.
After a delay of nearly 15 minutes, play resumed.
Tom Forrester was the next batter and he hit a three-run homer.
Back to the article:
Twins Manager Duffy Dyer claimed that Sontag lost his effectiveness because of the arguments that forced a long delay in the cold weather. “Their (the umpires’) job is to hustle up the game,” said Dyer. “He (Jacksa) tried telling me, ‘I can’t do anything about it,’ but Rende can stand there and make my pitcher lose his stuff.”The Foxes are 33-16 and still 2.5 games in front of the Madison Muskies.
Rende said, “My beef (with the base umpire) was over until Jacksa threw two of our guys out. He just didn’t handle it right.”
