June 15, 2010: Game Notes

LAST ACTION: The Dayton Dragons defeated the Timber Rattlers 8-7 to complete a three-game sweep of the Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field. Dayton had a 7-0 lead in the game, but Wisconsin rallied back to tie the game. However, Cameron Satterwhite hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to give the Dragons their winning run.

BARRAGE: Dayton hit six home runs in the three game series at Grand Chute.

VALIANT EFFORT: After falling behind 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning, the Rattlers scored three times in the fifth, twice in the sixth, and twice in the seventh. Chris Dennis drove in a run with a triple in the fifth and added two more RBI with a double in the seventh.

BUT: Dayton’s one run margin of victory made Sunday’s game the 21st Wisconsin game decided by one run in 2010. Wisconsin is 3-18 in one-run games this year.

HOME: The Rattlers wrapped up their final homestand of the first half with a 1-5 record. In the first half, Wisconsin went 13-22 at Time Warner Cable Field.

MAKING MOVES: The Milwaukee Brewers announced several moves after the game on Sunday. Pitchers Eric Arnett and Jose Sanchez have both been transferred to Arizona. Outfielder Franklin Romero, Jr. was sent to Helena. Wisconsin received outfielder Kentrail Davis and pitcher Matt Costello from Brevard County. The Wisconsin active roster is at 24, one short of the 25-man limit.

MEET THE NEW GUYS: Kentrail Davis was the 39th overall selection in the 2009 draft. The Brewers selected him out of the University of Tennessee with a supplemental first round pick. Davis is rated as the #6 prospect in the Milwaukee organization. Matt Costello is a left-handed pitcher who was picked in the 35th round of the 2009 draft out of Valdosta State University.

HEY, NOW! YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR: The Midwest League announced the rosters for the 2010 All-Star Game last week. Wisconsin has placed four players on the Western Division squad, including two starters. Khris Davis was elected as a starter in the outfield. Scooter Gennett will be the starting second baseman in the game. Pitchers Nick Bucci and Jake Odorizzi have also been voted as members of the team. The game will be played at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 22.

PROSPECTING: There are eight members of the active Timber Rattler roster who are rated as top 30 prospects in the Milwaukee system by Baseball America in their 2010 Prospect Handbook. Pitchers Jake Odorizzi (#9) and Kyle Heckathorn (#10) and outfielder Kentrail Davis (#6) are all rated in the top 10. Outfielder D’Vontrey Richardson (#18) is the only position player to make the list. Pitchers Jeremy Jeffress (#21), Del Howell (#22), Nick Bucci (#29), and Maverick Lasker (#30) are the other four players on the top 30 list.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Clinton LumberKings are the Midwest League affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. The LumberKings are 35-28 and in third place in the Western Division of the Midwest League. They can no longer catch Cedar Rapids for the first half division title. Clinton trails Quad Cities by three games for the Western Division Wild Card with six games remaining in the first half.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers and LumberKings met three times at Time Warner Cable Field earlier this half. Clinton took two out of three games from the Rattlers. Wisconsin won game one on April 11 8-2. The LumberKings came out on top by scores of 7-4 and 4-2 over the next two days.

FAMILIAR FACES: Former Timber Rattlers manager Terry Pollreisz is the hitting coach for the LumberKings. Outfielders Danny Carroll and Kalian Sams and infielder Luis Nunez wore a Timber Rattlers uniform earlier in their professional careers.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .243 as a team. They have scored 287 runs (4.6/game) and hit 30 home runs. The LmberKings are hitting .244 as a team. They have scored 313 runs (5.0/game) and hit 66 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.62 while allowing a total of 327 runs (5.2/game) this season. Clinton pitchers have a team ERA of 3.07 while allowing 241 runs (3.8/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 104 errors. The LumberKings defense has committed 79 errors. Wisconsin is 9-19 on the road this season. Clinton is 20-13 at Alliant Energy Field this season.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed four members of the current Clinton roster on their list of Top 30 prospects in the Seattle organization before the 2010 season. Infielder Nick Franklin (#9) is the highest rated player. Outfielder James Jones (#20), infielder Gabriel Noriega (#24), and catcher Steve Baron are also on the list.

CLINTON ALL-STARS: The LumberKings placed four players on the Western Division squad for the Midwest League All-Star Game in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 22. Vinnie Catricala is the starting designated hitter for the West. Nick Franklin is the reserve at shortstop. Pitchers Brian Moran and Erasmo Ramirez also made the team.

CLINTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Taylor Stanton was the 26th round pick of Seattle in the 2008 draft out of Diablo Valley College. Last season, Stanton pitched for the Everett Aquasox of the Northwest League. He went 5-3 with a 3.50 ERA in 15 games (all starts) for the Aquasox. Stanton struck out 81 and walked 25 in 87-1/3 innings in 2009. In his start prior to this evening, Stanton beat Lake County on June 9 by allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts over six innings. On April 12 at Time Warner Cable Field, Stanton beat the Rattlers. He gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. Stanton held the Rattlers scoreless until the sixth Cameron Garfield knocked in a run with a groundout and Chris Dennis hit a two run homer to get the Rattlers to within 5-3. But, he recorded the final out of the inning to get the win in his LumberKings debut.
