June 19, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT THURSDAY NIGHT: The Clinton LumberKings defeated the Timber Rattlers 3-2 at Alliant Energy Field. Kalian Sams drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a one out single.

REVENGE: All three runs for the LumberKings were driven in by former Timber Rattlers. Danny Carroll knocked in two runs with a single in the third inning. Sams knocked in the winning run. Carroll was a Timber Rattler for 60 games in 2008. Sams played 48 games with Wisconsin in 2007.

A BAD OMEN? The Rattlers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The team that scored first each of the three games in Clinton wound up on the losing end of the score.

NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: Hunter Morris, the 4th round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, was activated and made his professional debut Thursday with Wisconsin. He went 0-for-3, was hit by a pitch, and drove in a run. Morris knocked in the run in the first inning with a bases loaded grounder to short.

ROLL TIDE! Del Howell was the starting pitcher for the Rattlers on Thursday. He pitched a career high 6-1/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Howell was not involved in the decision.

WATCH OUT! Three Timber Rattlers hitters were plunked by pitches Thursday. Kentrail Davis has hit in the first inning. In the sixth inning Khris Davis and Morris were hit on consecutive pitches.

NO. REALLY! WATCH OUT! Kentrail Davis has been hit by a pitch in three straight games with Wisconsin. Davis had been hit 10 times in 33 games with Brevard County to start the 2010 season.

STOP ME IF YOU’VE HEARD THIS ONE: The Rattlers are now 3-19 in games decided by one run in 2010. Thursday was the fifth ‘walk-off’ victory for an opponent this season. It was also the 15th time in 2010 that a Rattlers opponent scored the decisive run in their last at bat.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Kane County Cougars are the Midwest League affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. They are currently 32-35 and in sixth place in the Western Division. The Cougars have won two straight as they won the final two games at Quad Cities in their most recent series. Kane County has gone 6-4 in their last ten games.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 4-2 in the first six games of the season series with the Cougars. Wisconsin opened the 2010 season by taking two out of three from the Cougars at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers also took two out of three from Kane County at Elfstrom Stadium from May 25-27.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .246 as a team. They have scored 304 runs (4.6/game) and hit 31 home runs. The Cougars are hitting .241 as a team. They have scored 310 runs (4.6/game) and hit 32 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.49 while allowing a total of 333 runs (5.0/game) this season. Kane County pitchers have a team ERA of 4.06 while allowing 311 runs (4.6/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 106 errors. The Cougars defense has committed 90 errors. Wisconsin is 11-20 on the road this season. Kane County is 18-14 at Elfstrom Stadium.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed five members of the current Kane County roster on their top 30 list of Athletics prospects. Catcher Max Stassi (#4) is the highest rated Cougar. Pitchers Ian Kroll (#16), Connor Hoehn (#22), and Justin Marks (#27) are joined by outfielder Tyreace House (#28) on the list.

KANE COUNTY ALL-STARS: The Cougars have three players heading to the Midwest League All-Star Game in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 22. Pitchers Ian Krol and Connor Hoehn will be joined by catcher Max Stassi. Stassi is the reserve catcher for the Western Division.

KANE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: RHP Dan Straily was Oakland’s 24th round pick in the 2009 draft. He was selected out of Marshall. In his final season with the Thundering Herd, Straily went 4-3 with a 4.27ERA in 13 games. He spent his first pro season with Vancouver, Oakland’s Northwest League affiliate. He was 5-3 with a 4.19ERA in 16 games (11 starts) with the Canadians. Straily struck out 66 and walked 18 in 59 innings with Vancouver. IN his start prior to this evening, Straily beat Lake County on June 12 at home with six shutout innings. Straily allowed three hits, walked none and struck out four. He has started twice against the Timber Rattlers in 2010. Straily beat the Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field on April 10 and picked up a no decision at Elfstrom Stadium on May 27. In his two starts against the Rattlers, Straily has allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks over 12 innings. Straily has struck out 16 Timber Rattlers this season, including 10 in seven innings on May 27.
