One of my plans during the offseason was to gather information on certain seasons of Appleton baseball history and put together something similar to Baseball Library. Yeah. Not so much.
However, I did track down the 1960 and 1985 seasons and I finally remembered to put them together.
A little background. The 1960 team was called the Fox Cities Foxes. They were an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and played in the Three-I League. This was the third season of baseball's return to Appleton. See, the Appleton Papermakers folded after the 1953 season. There was no pro baseball in the Fox Cities from 1954-1957. The Foxes restarted the tradition in 1958 and the Rattlers are the direct descendants of this team.
The 1985 team was called the Appleton Foxes. They were an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and had won three straight Midwest League Championships. This team was trying to make it four straight.
What we've missed so far:
The Foxes of 1960 had played three games before their April 27 game at Cedar Rapids. Things did not go well for Earl Weaver's team as the opened the season in Sioux City against the Soos.

In that last game at Sioux City, Foxes pitchers walked 15. Think Earl Weaver was a happy manager on that ride out of Sioux City?

After the first 13 games of 1985, the Foxes were 8-5. They trailed the Madison Muskies by 4.5 games. The Muskies started the season with a 10 game winning streak and they were 13-1 after the games of April 26.
This all leads into April 27, 1960. Game four of the season. At Cedar Rapids Braves.

FINAL: 14 innings

The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the eighth. Jim Youngdahl tied the game in the top of the 9th with an RBI single.
The Foxes took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eleventh inning on a Pete Ward RBI single. But, the Braves tied the game in the bottom of the eleventh.
Then, Jim Lehew, a submariner from the right side, gave up a lead off homer to Steve Ryder in the bottom of the fourteenth inning.
Of note in this game:
Pat Gillick was the starter for the Foxes. His line: 8IP, 7H, 3R, 7BB, 11K
"Hortonville's Larry Huebner relieved in the tenth inning for the Braves". His line: 2IP, 2H, R

Foxes are 9-5
The Post-Crescent article makes a point to mention that Sedar had been an outfielder with the Foxes in 1982 and 1983. It also mentions that Sedar's switch to the mound happened so late in Spring Training that the White Sox media guide still lists him as an outfielder.
Sedar's line in this game: 8IP, 4H, R, 2BB, 6K
Offensive stars of the game for the Foxes:
Mike Taylor, CF: 3-for-5, RUN, 2RBI, SB
Jerry Bartolani, 2B: 3-for-5, RUN, RBI
Thank you for sticking around to the end of this post. I will try to keep this post short as we move forward. And judging the schedule the Foxes had in 1960 from April 28-May 1 that will be pretty easy. HINT!
A place to follow the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the Midwest League, Minor League baseball, Major League Baseball, and everything in between in that order.

What my gut tells me (4/27/10)

WIS 4

Boxscore | Game story
My gut tells me that if I had room on the front page of the Rattlers website, the full headline from the story that gets e-mailed out to the media would have made it. That e-mail was titled: Rohan rides; Late Peoria homer foils Rattler comeback.
Wednesday marks two games in a row in which the Rattlers rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to tie a game. It also marks two games in a row in which the opponents have scored to retake the lead in their next at bat.
This team is capable of stringing together some wins. What is going to set them off is a rally that puts them on top and they take down a win.
That being said, they are not going to win many games if they continue to get down three runs early in the game.
My gut tells me that the Efrain Nieves who tossed four scoreless innings of relief his last time out, has to show up as the starting pitcher on Thursday. Or it's going to be a long game.
Get 'em tomorrow.
Spare a thought for Bob Uecker
Uecker to have heart surgery
Checking the twitter feeds of several who are there. Adam McCalvy, Doug Russell, Drew Olson, and Drew Wagner the bottom line is that he will be doing the game tonight and tomorrow. Then, he will have an enlarged aortic artery replaced.
Drew Olson adds this note.
Get well and take care, sir.
UPDATE:
Tom Haudricourt has this update after the press conference.
Hall of Fame Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker will undergo heart surgery on Friday and will miss the next 10-12 weeks of games. That conference was supposed to start seven minutes ago.
The Brewers made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon and plan to provide further details about Uecker's health in a 3:30 p.m. CT press conference at Miller Park.

Drew Olson adds this note.
Hoffman, Weeks, McGehee, Counsell, fielder, and Edmonds on hand.Drew Wagner has this from Mr. Baseball:
"I hope to be back in a very short period of time. I'm looking forward to getting it done and get back to work."I am thinking good thoughts for one of my broadcasting role models.
Get well and take care, sir.
UPDATE:
Tom Haudricourt has this update after the press conference.
Dr. Jim Klezca of Froedtert Hospital announced that legendary Brewers radio voice Bob Uecker needs the aortic valve in his heart replaced and also a repair of the enlarged aorta.
That surgery will be performed by Dr. Alfred Nicolosi at Froedtert on Friday morning.
Klezca said a heart mumur was detected in a test last September and also the aorta was discovered to be enlarged. The conditions were monitored but they grew worse in recent weeks.
"Something needs to be done," said Klezca, who participated in a news conference at Miller Park along with Uecker.
"He's at high risk of something bad happening."
Klezca said the most recent heart scans "showed the aorta has grown larger. It could potentially rupture before the end of the season."
Uecker said his heart condition had been monitored since last September by Klezca. He said he hoped to wait until after the season but "things changed dramatically" after the team's last road trip.
"I've known about this a long time," said Uecker. "I was given the OK to travel and exercise, everything I do healthwise, but some of the health problems have become a little more evident.

April 27, 2010: Game Notes
LAST ACTION: The Beloit Snappers spoiled a Timber Rattlers comeback on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field with a 7-5 win. Sunday’s matchup with the Snappers was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on May 14.
SULTANS OF SWING: Beloit snapped a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of home runs. Aaron Hick hit a solo homer off Nick Bucci with one out. Later in the inning, Angel Morales hit a two-out, two-run homer to give the Snappers a three run lead.
DIRE STRAITS: Wisconsin trailed 5-2 when rain halted the game after the bottom of the seventh inning. After an 81 minute delay – and a scoreless top of the eighth – the Rattlers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
WALK OF LIFE: The Rattlers had scored one run in the eighth on an RBI double Scooter Gennett. Beloit got the second out, but proceeded to walk Pete Fatse and hit Sean Halton to load the bases. Cameron Garfield and Joey Paciorek drew back-to-back walks to force in the tying runs.
SKATEAWAY: Hiram Burgos had two outs and a runner at first base in the top of the ninth inning. He allowed three straight hits and tossed a wild pitch to allow two runs and Beloit had a 7-5 lead.
MONEY FOR NOTHING: The Snappers scored twice on wild pitches in Saturday’s game. Both wild pitches came with two outs.
SO FAR AWAY: The Rattlers scored twice on three hits in the bottom of the first inning off Beloit starting pitcher Daniel Osterbrock. Over the next six innings, Osterbrock allowed two hits and no Rattler base runner made it past second base. Osterbrock struck out eight and walked one. In four starts against the Rattlers, Osterbrock has struck out 30 Wisconsin hitters over 26 innings.
BROTHERS IN ARMS: D’Vontrey Richardson and Sean Halton each extended their hitting streaks. Richardson was 2-for-5 on Saturday and is on a seven game streak. Halton was 1-for-3 and is on a six game streak.
YOUR FACT OF THE DAY: The rainout on Sunday was the second home rainout of the season for the Rattlers. The Rattlers were rained out twice at home during the entire 2009 season.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Peoria Chiefs are the Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. They are 10-8 and in third place in the Western Division. In their most recent series, were swept in a three game series at Quad Cities. Last year, the Chiefs went 81-57. They qualified for the playoffs as the second half Western Division Champions when they finished the second half at 43-26. Peoria was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round courtesy of a sweep at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
FAMILIAR FACE: The Chiefs are managed by Casey Kopitzke. Kopitzke was a 27th round pick of the Cubs in the 1999 draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Kopitzke, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin played in the Cubs organization from 1999-2006 and made it as high as Triple-A Iowa. Kopitzke played against the Timber Ratters when he was a member of the Lansing Lugnuts in 2000.
2009 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin and Peoria met 15 times last season. The Timber Rattlers edged the Chiefs 8-7 in the season series. Wisconsin went 1-6 in seven games at O’Brien Field last season. All of the games at O’Brien Field in 2009 were played in the second half.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .267 as a team. They have scored 93 runs (5.5/game) and hit 9 home runs. The Chiefs are hitting .242 as a team. They have scored 77 runs (4.3/game) and hit one home run. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.62 while allowing a total of 94 runs (5.5/game) this season. Peoria pitchers have a team ERA of 3.67 while allowing 72 runs (4.0/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 28 errors. The Chiefs defense has committed 19 errors. Wisconsin is 2-4 away from Time Warner Cable Field this season. Peoria is 6-0 at O’Brien Field this season.
PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed four members of the current Peoria roster on their list of Top 30 Prospects in the Chicago Cubs organization before the 2010 season. Shortstop Hak-Ju Lee (#6) and second baseman Logan Watkins (#7) are both in the top ten. Pitchers Trey McNutt (#16) and Jeff Antigua (#19) are both on the list.
PEORIA STARTING PITCHER: RHP Trey McNutt was a 32nd round pick of the Cubs in the 2009 draft out of Shelton State Community College in Alabama. He split time between the Arizona League Cubs and the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League. In his two stops in the Cubs’ system, McNutt went 3-1 with a .98 ERA over 13 games (six starts). He walked 15 and struck out 28 over 27-2/3 innings pitched. Tonight is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The first time the Burlington Bees headed to the clubhouse Monday night it was with the lead. The second time — and the most important time — the Beloit Snappers were ahead.
Burlington held a one-run advantage in the top of the ninth when the teams' Midwest League game was postponed because of rain. An hour and two minutes later, the teams came back out onto the Community Field playing surface.
This time when the teams left the field, Beloit came away with a 6-4 victory.

Mehring Monday: Not really an offday
The schedule may say that there is nothing going on at Time Warner Cable Field today. But, what does the schedule know?
The front office was there before 9:00am this morning. It was time to pull the tarp off the field from yesterday's rain/wind storm.
The grounds crew got to work right after that because the field needs to be ready when the team gets back from this road trip.
The ticket department started taking orders for the next homestand.
The groups department was making calls.
The corporate department was dealing with their clients.
Players were there to work on their throwing program and may get a workout in because of the weather on Sunday.
Food & Beverage were doing what ever it is that food & beverage does on an off day. (Note: I don't pay any attention to what Food & Beverage does. As long as they bring me my food before the game and refill my Mountain Dew during the game, I really don't want to ask them too many questions.)
Me? I just got my haircut and oil changed. Okay. You caught me. I am not at the stadium. But, is running errands really an offday?

Sunday's game has been PPD

Howdy! My name is Perry, the Postponement Penguin. Mehring got the idea to hire me because if bad news is related by something that is seen as cute and adorable -- like he would freakin' know - it might not seem that bad.
So.....
Sunday's game with Beloit has been rained out. It has been postponed to Friday, May 14 and will be played as part of a doubleheader starting at 5:05pm. If you would like more information, like the rain out ticket policy and other fun facts, click here.

Joey Paciorek Profiled
The PC has this profile of Timber Rattlers infielder Joey Paciorek.
Q: Milwaukee Bucks guard Luke Ridnour also grew up in Blaine, Wash. Know him?Click through for more...much more.
A: I met him. His dad was actually my PE teacher in high school. Yeah, they've got his whole shrine at the high school. Real big deal. He's really the first pro athlete to come out of there.
Q: Word is, had baseball not worked out, you were interested in becoming a firefighter. True?
A: Yeah, there was just some interest and it's a real respectable job. I couldn't do a desk job. Just kind of caught my eye. I was going to go to (college) and do a fire science course and play baseball.
