One of my plans during the offseason was to gather information on certain seasons of Appleton baseball history and put together something similar to Baseball Library. Yeah. Not so much.
However, I did track down the 1960 and 1985 seasons and I finally remembered to put them together.
A little background. The 1960 team was called the Fox Cities Foxes. They were an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles and played in the Three-I League. This was the third season of baseball's return to Appleton. See, the Appleton Papermakers folded after the 1953 season. There was no pro baseball in the Fox Cities from 1954-1957. The Foxes restarted the tradition in 1958 and the Rattlers are the direct descendants of this team.
The 1985 team was called the Appleton Foxes. They were an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and had won three straight Midwest League Championships. This team was trying to make it four straight.
What we've missed so far:
The Foxes of 1960 had played three games before their April 27 game at Cedar Rapids. Things did not go well for Earl Weaver's team as the opened the season in Sioux City against the Soos.

In that last game at Sioux City, Foxes pitchers walked 15. Think Earl Weaver was a happy manager on that ride out of Sioux City?
The 1985 Foxes, started out about the same as the 2010 Timber Rattlers

*-Home games only
After the first 13 games of 1985, the Foxes were 8-5. They trailed the Madison Muskies by 4.5 games. The Muskies started the season with a 10 game winning streak and they were 13-1 after the games of April 26.
This all leads into April 27, 1960. Game four of the season. At Cedar Rapids Braves.

The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the eighth. Jim Youngdahl tied the game in the top of the 9th with an RBI single.
The Foxes took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eleventh inning on a Pete Ward RBI single. But, the Braves tied the game in the bottom of the eleventh.
Then, Jim Lehew, a submariner from the right side, gave up a lead off homer to Steve Ryder in the bottom of the fourteenth inning.
Of note in this game:
Pat Gillick was the starter for the Foxes. His line: 8IP, 7H, 3R, 7BB, 11K
"Hortonville's Larry Huebner relieved in the tenth inning for the Braves". His line: 2IP, 2H, R

WP: Ed Sedar...Yes, that Ed Sedar

Foxes are 9-5
The Post-Crescent article makes a point to mention that Sedar had been an outfielder with the Foxes in 1982 and 1983. It also mentions that Sedar's switch to the mound happened so late in Spring Training that the White Sox media guide still lists him as an outfielder.
Sedar's line in this game: 8IP, 4H, R, 2BB, 6K
Offensive stars of the game for the Foxes:
Mike Taylor, CF: 3-for-5, RUN, 2RBI, SB
Jerry Bartolani, 2B: 3-for-5, RUN, RBI
Thank you for sticking around to the end of this post. I will try to keep this post short as we move forward. And judging the schedule the Foxes had in 1960 from April 28-May 1 that will be pretty easy. HINT!
