Rejection Theater

Quick backstory. I heard about an opening at WSAU/WIFC in Wausau and quickly sent a cover letter, tape, & resume in late August of 1991.

The following letter -- dated September 5, 1991 -- arrived shortly thereafter:

Dear Mr. Mehring:

Thank you for your repsonse to our recent job opportunity at WSAU/WIFC.

I regret to inform you that we have narrowed the field from the many qualified inquiries we received regarding this position.

With your permission we would like to retain your resume in our files for future consideration should another opportunity arise.

Thank you again for your interest in our company. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors.

Sincerely,
Depression set in as hopes were dashed. But, two weeks later, the phone rang at my parent's house. It was the gentleman whose signature was on the letter. "We have another opening. Interested in coming up to Wausau for an interview?" I can be up there in four hours was what I wanted to reply. But, I asked when it would be best for him for me to come up there. So, I sent another tape with different material and scheduled an interview for about a week later.

I sent a Thank You note for the interview after I got back and waited for word on when I could start my radio career in WSAU/WIFC (owned by Journal Communications).

Then, this -- dated October 5 -- arrived in the mail:

Dear Mr.

Sincerely,

To his credit, there was a hand written note below the form letter: It was a pleasure meeting you Chris! You are a talented individual with a great career ahead of you. I wish you the best.

Next week: The PGA.
