Whitecap kudos

Brian VanOchten is the West Michigan Whitecap beat writer for the Grand Rapids Press and he also has a blog. This is the post about the Whitecaps Winter Baseball Banquet from last week.

A doubleheader championship celebration

It was a spectacular night for Detroit Tigers fans on Wednesday night in Grand Rapids. Yeah, sure, the West Michigan Whitecaps Winter Baseball Banquet (see photos) is a nice, little gathering of passionate baseball fans every January, where the Tigers send along a few representatives to say a few new nice words, sign a few autographs and tell a few stories. It's always a nice event. Except, this year, it was buzz unlike any other flowing through DeVos Place, which was packed with Tigers fans who've fallen in love with their team all over again.

It helped big-time that Tigers manager Jim Leyland was the keynote speaker. (read story) He could've run for governor and out-polled both Jennifer Granholm and Dick DeVos in the last election. No doubt about it. There's no one else more popular in this state right at this moment than the 62-year-old, no-nonsense, chain-smoking Leyland, who was a big hit with the crowd at the banquet.

More at the post including some nice words for members of the Whitecap front office.
