Prospect Insider's Prospect #10

Jason has reached number ten on his Mariner prospect countdown. He is a potential Rattler for 2007.

No. 10 - Greg Halman

Just a few of the notes on the native of Haarlem, Holland:

Strengths: Halman is an excellent athlete with a lot of upside, and his ranking here in the top 10 is almost solely based on his risky high-ceiling potential. The 19-year-old possesses well above average speed and raw power that may ultimately surpass that of Wlad Balentien. Halman is already a solid defender and has the tools to excel in the field, on the bases and at the plate. At 6-4 and 220 pounds, Halman can be an imposing force and could develop into a dominant player, using all five tools.

Weaknesses: The former MVP of the Dutch Professional League is inexperienced and needs a full season under his belt in order to make marked progress in his overall development.Halman needs to work on a lot of things, but first and foremost he must learn how to approach each at-bat. He hasn’t shown any patience at the plate and is only a step from being considered a true hacker. The good news is that he’s young enough to turn himself into a blue chipper.

Future: Halman has all the tools to blossom into a pretty good ballplayer, but he does have holes, most notably in his approach at the plate. He is, however, just 19 and has ample time to develop his game. He’ll likely start the 2007 season at Class A Wisconsin. If he hits his ceiling, he’s a run-producing bat who’s an asset in the field.
