Two more days

Name changes on deck for Q-C baseball team
What’s in a name?

Plenty, as the new ownership of the Quad-Cities’ Midwest League franchise intends to illustrate during the next two days.

The franchise has scheduled news conferences for today and Thursday, and names are expected to be the dominant topic at each.

The club is expected to announce a naming rights partnership for Davenport’s John O’Donnell Stadium at a news conference this morning and will announce the team’s new nickname at a similar event Thursday afternoon.
...
Heller indicated that when a deal was finalized it was likely that the facility no longer would carry the name of O’Donnell, the longtime sports editor of the Davenport Times-Democrat, a predecessor of the Quad-City Times. Originally built as Municipal Stadium in 1931, the stadium was renamed in O’Donnell’s honor on May 27, 1971, shortly after his death.

“A clean start is something that we are seeking,” he said.

Thursday’s announcement will conclude the “Your Team, Your Name” contest.

Heller anticipated announcing the winner of the nickname contest shortly after his organization assumed ownership of the franchise from Seventh Inning Stretch, which was led by Kevin Krause, two weeks ago. The announcement was delayed as club officials awaited baseball’s approval of the nickname and logo.

The winner will come from a group of six finalists that fans chose between during an online balloting in September — Channel Cats, Current, River Bandits, River Eagles, Swing and Talons.

Since that time, Heller has offered only that the option of retaining the Swing of the Quad-Cities nickname has been eliminated.
Only a few days left, but it must be out of my system. Because I have no interest in posting SWINGing on a Star from Hudson Hawk by Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello. Good song. Horrible movie.

I wonder how (or if) the community will react to John O'Donnell being removed from the stadium name.
