113 Days to Opening Day 2008

Opening Day 2008 for the Timber Rattlers is April 3. That is 113 days from today. This off-season, the countdown will be based on books. Each day between now and Opening Day 2008, I will pick a random book out of my library and excerpt a passage off the page number corresponding with the number of days remaining to the first pitch of the new season. I will try not to repeat a book during the countdown.

It’s X-Files week at Rattler Radio. I freely admit to you and the world that I own seven X-Files novels. These are books based on the series and were not turned into episodes. Well, six of them are like that. One is the novelization of the movie.

Today’s novel is Antibodies by Kevin J. Anderson. There is a deadly virus on the loose. Scully and Mulder are on the case. The investigation takes them to…

Survivalist Compound

Thursday, 5:09pm

“We’re federal agents,” Mulder announced. “I’m going to reach for my identification.” With agonizing slowness, he groped inside his topcoat.

Unfortunately, all the weapons remained leveled at him, if possible with even greater ire. He realized that radical survivalists probably wanted nothing to do with any government agency.

One middle-aged man with a long beard stepped forward to the fence and glared at them. “And do federal agents not know how to read?” he said in a firm intelligent voice. “You’ve passed dozens of NO TRESSPASSING signs to get here. Do you have a duly authorized search warrant?”

“I’m sorry, sir,” Scully said. “We were trying to stop your dog, the black one. We’re searching for a man named Darin Kennessy. We have reason to believe he may have information on these people.” She reached inside her jacket and withdrew the photos. “A woman and her boy.”

Put today’s excerpt in a baseball context.
