More good news from Quad Cities

The River Bandits had a great season. If there was one blemish...aside from the radio booth windows that do not open, but that's for a different day...it would have been the playing surface of Modern Woodmen Park. However, according to this Quad Cities Times story, help is on the way.

Modern Woodmen Park playing surface to get makeover
Harvesting the small patch of corn that sits behind the Quad-Cities River Bandits bullpen won’t be the only field work taking place at Modern Woodmen Park this fall.

The playing field at Davenport’s Midwest League stadium will be getting an offseason makeover as well, addressing concerns of the River Bandits’ parent club, the St. Louis Cardinals.

Later this month, the infield will be re-graded, and a lot of re-edging will be done to provide a more consistent playing surface.
Why is this important?
“The field is something that doesn’t impact the fans in the stands, but it does impact our relationship with the Cardinals,’’ Quad-Cities general manager Kirk Goodman said. “As the season wore on, the field took a pretty good beating and it something we will address. We plan to spend a lot of time working on it during the offseason.’’

Several of St. Louis’ roving instructors and visiting team managers commented on the late-season condition of the surface.

“Teams have invested a lot of dollars into the players they send here, and you would hate to see somebody get hurt because of a problem with the field that could have been addressed,’’ Quad-Cities manager Steve Dillard said.
