A year ago, the Mavericks weren’t even a topic of conversation toward the end of the season. They finished dead last in the California League with a 58-82 record.
But things have turned around dramatically in the High Desert. The Mavs improved their record to 83-57 this year, winning the first- and second-half titles in the South Division to advance to the playoffs. Because they won the first-half title, the Mavs got a bye in the opening round and will have home-field advantage in Round 2, hosting Games 1, 2 and 5 (if necessary).

Alex Liddi and Joe Dunigan, both of whom played for Low-A Wisconsin in 2008, had breakthrough seasons. Liddi batted .345 with 23 home runs and 104 RBIs to earn the Cal League MVP, and Dunigan had 30 home runs with 104 RBIs to make the postseason all-star team.
“I think I found my routine to keep me strong during the season,” Liddi said. “More consistency and less ups and downs in the season.”
Leadoff hitter Tyson Gillies led the league in stolen bases (44) and took second in on-base percentage (.430). Gillies, along with Liddi, started in the Futures Game during the MLB All-Star week. J.C. Ramirez, Michael Pineda and Steven Hensley added depth to the starting rotation, while Phillippe Aumont, who got promoted to Double-A, helped the Mavs win the first-half title as a closer.
At the same time, though, the Mavs enjoyed huge contributions from their returners. Donnie Hume led the league with 17 wins and had just five losses. Jake Wild posted a solid 4.09 ERA, and Steven Richard filled in the closing role after Aumont left, appearing in a team-high 56 games.
