Quakes force Game 5
The winner of today's game advances to championship series
The Mavericks, preparing to head back to the High Desert, were quieter than usual in the visiting locker room after the game. They were realizing that every game counts in the playoffs and that they’re on the brink of either the California League championship series or the end of their season.

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes edged High Desert 2-1 on Tuesday night at The Epicenter in Game 4 of the second round of the playoffs to even the series at 2 to force Game 5 at Stater Bros. Stadium today. The winner of today’s game advances to the championship series, which starts on Thursday.

The Mavs, who led the league in runs scored during the regular season, hit just 23-for-94 (.245) in the first three playoffs games, and the trend continued on Tuesday as they tallied four hits.

Rancho Cucamonga starter Ryan Brasier silenced the Mavs for eight innings, giving up three hits, a walk and no runs with seven strikeouts. Closer Michael Kohn, who had a stellar 0.94 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 28.2 innings in the regular season, pitched the final inning to pick up the save.

But the Mavs provided some thrilling moments in the ninth for their fans who traveled from the High Desert.

With two outs and Jeff Dominguez and Carlos Peguero on second and first, Joe Dunigan hit a line drive toward right. Second baseman Carlos Colmenares dove and seemed to have had it in his glove, but the ball dropped on the field, scoring Dominguez and advancing Peguero to third. But Kohn struck out Travis Scott to end the game.
