Quakes shaken
The way the Quakes have played in the playoffs, you had to figure they wouldn't go down in the decisive Game 5 of the South Division Championship Series without a fight.Ex-Rattlers for High Desert:
After trailing by four, the Quakes closed the gap to a single run, but the Mavericks' longball assault turned out to be too much, and the Quakes' season ended with an 11-6 loss Wednesday night at Stater Bros. Stadium.
The Mavericks scored eight of their runs on home runs, including a two-run homer by Carlos Peguero in the bottom of the seventh as they pulled away late.
Both teams were trying to advance to the California League Championship Series for the first time in more than a decade. The Quakes hadn't been there since 1998, the Mavericks since 1997.
The best-of-five League Championship Series begins tonight with the Mavericks hosting San Jose, which defeated Bakersfield in the North Division Championship Series 3-2.
The Mavericks, who hit a league-leading 164 home runs during the regular season, got home runs from Travis Scott, Juan Diaz, Joe Dunigan and Carlos Peguero, who combined for 80 of those regular-season Maverick home runs.
