1991
While playing for the Oakland Raiders of the NFL, Bo Jackson suffers a career-threatening injury in an AFC playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Originally diagnosed as a pulled thigh muscle, the Kansas City Royals learn of the severity of the injury just as spring begins. They will release Jackson shortly after, fearing that his baseball career is over, and he'll sign with the White Sox.
Jackson played 23 games for the Sox in 1991, missed the 1992 season, and hit 16 homers in 85 games in 1993. Then, he signed with the Angels and finished his career with 13 homers in 75 games in 1994.
1982
Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson become the 12th and 13th players elected to the Hall of Fame by the BBWAA in their first year of eligibility. Aaron falls nine votes shy of becoming the first-ever unanimous selection, and his 97.8 election percentage is 2nd only to Ty Cobb's 98.2 percent in the inaugural 1936 election.
I wonder what excuses those seven writers used for not voting for Aaron.
1883
Both of the New York ML clubs will play simultaneously at the Polo Grounds. Their fields will be separated by an 8-foot fence.
That must have been crowded.
