SEATTLE--Daren Brown can't wait for spring training to start, and not just because he is looking forward to his new job as manager of Triple-A Tacoma.
"I am in nine inches of snow down here in Amarillo (Texas)," he said. "It's not helping my golf game at all."
A joke? From Daren Brown? Kidding.
Joking aside, Brown is very serious about his new job. He has managed the past six years in the Mariners organization, including last season with Double-A San Antonio, where the Missions finished 60-78. The previous two seasons he managed at high Class A Inland Empire. Brown had winning records in his first seven seasons as a manager.
"It was nice to be promoted, and except for players who have recently signed, I will have managed almost all of the players I will have in Tacoma," he said.
Down at the bottom of the article is this note on Wladimir Balentien (WI '04):
Outfielder Wladimir Balentien, one of the Mariners top power-hitting prospects, hit .268/.342/.572 with nine home runs in 138 at-bats for Lara in Venezuela. Balentien, 22, led San Antonio with 22 homers last season, but he batted .230/.337/.435 and struck out 140 times.
