Whitecaps lose one?

The five-time, five-time, five-time, five-time, five-time MWL Champion West Michigan Whitecaps received some tough news before they open up defense of their title.

Lew Chamberlin, the West Michigan Whitecaps' CEO, left for Lakeland, Fla., today with a few items on his agenda.

Close to the top of his list was lobbying the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Rick Porcello, the organization's 2008 first-round draft pick, to start his professional career with the Whitecaps.

"Looks like I'm a little too late," Chamberlin said.

The Tigers announced earlier this week Porcello will be assigned to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the club's high Class A organization.

Talent had a lot to do with the decision. Can you guess what another reason would be?

"The possible cold weather here was a factor in their decision, but his talent level had more to do with it than anything," said Chamberlin, who will stay in Lakeland for the remainder of spring training.

Like it won't be cold in Detroit, Chicago, New York or any other northern city in April (or October) when Porcello makes it to the Major Leagues.
