September 2, 2009: Game Notes

LAST ACTION: The Timber Rattlers beat the Kane County Cougars 2-0 at Elfstrom Stadium on August 31. Maverick Lasker pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits in his Timber Rattlers debut.

MAVERICK! Lasker, a 5th round pick of the Brewers in the 2008 draft, had been 5-1 in the Arizona League before his promotion. The right-hander matched his professional high for innings pitched in a game. He is scheduled to start again at Beloit on Saturday night.

RITCHIE RICH: Brandon Ritchie worked the final two innings to finish off the shutout. He allowed two hits and struck out one to earn his fourth save of the season.

ANY WAY TO GET THOSE RUNS IN: Josh Prince reached on an error to start the game. He went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an error for a 1-0 lead.

AND AGAIN: Michael Vass singled with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to drive in an insurance run.

WELL, THAT’S OVER: The victory over the Cougars ended Wisconsin’s nine-game losing streak to Kane County. Monday was the first win over the Cougars since the first game of a doubleheader on June 20.

AND SO IS THAT: The Rattlers completed their nine-game road trip to Burlington and Kane County with a 1-7 record and one rainout. Wisconsin has three road games left this season and they have a record of 21-44 away from Time Warner Cable Field.

AUGUST NUMBERS: Wisconsin went 11-18 in 29 games during August. The team hit .233 and had an ERA of 4.25 during the month. Cody Scarpetta and Daniel Meadows each had two wins during the month to lead the team in victories. Scarpetta had an ERA of 1.95 in five games (four starts). Brock Kjeldgaard was the leading hitter for the month with a .319 average, three home runs, and 14 RBI.

BACK HOME AGAIN: The Rattlers wrap up their 2009 home schedule with three games against the Kernels. Wisconsin is 37-31 at Time Warner Cable Field.

PLAYER MOVES: Scarpetta and infielder Mike Brownstein were promoted to Huntsville yesterday. Brandon Sizemore, a 30th round pick by Milwaukee in the 2009 draft out of the College of Charleston, was promoted to Wisconsin from the Arizona League affiliate of the Brewers.

SOMETHING ABOUT ATTENDANCE: The Timber Rattlers are at 238,852 in 65 home games this season to set a new single season attendance record. If the Rattlers draw 11,148 fans over the final three games of the season, they will hit 250,000 for the season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Cedar Rapids Kernels are the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Cedar Rapids is in the Midwest League playoffs as the first half Wild Card in the Western Division. The Kernels were 40-30 in the second half. They are 33-29 in the second half to give them an overall record of 73-59.

SEASON SERIES: The Timber Rattlers are 7-9 against Cedar Rapids in 2009. Wisconsin is 3-5 against the Kernels at Time Warner Cable Field.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .237 as a team. They have scored 527 runs (4.0/game) and hit 59 home runs. The Kernels are hitting .257 as a team. They have scored 640 runs (4.8/game) and hit 62 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.25 while allowing a total of 650 runs (4.9/game). Cedar Rapids pitchers have a team ERA of 3.89 while allowing 577 runs (4.4/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 158 errors. The Kernels defense has committed 125 errors. PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook listed four players on the current Kernel roster on their list of top 30 Angel prospects. All four are pitchers. Tyler Chatwood is the highest rated at number 11. Will Smith (#12), Manuarys Correa (#19) and Ryan Chaffee (#21) are also on the list.

OUT OF THE DRAFT 2009: The Kernels have two players from the 2009 draft class of the Angels. Outfielder Mike Trout was a first round pick (25th overall) out of Millville (NJ) High School this year. Pitcher Garrett Richards was a supplemental 1st round pick (42nd overall) out of the University of Oklahoma.

ALL-STARS: The Kernels had six players make the Western Division squad for the Midwest League All-Star game in Clinton. Alexi Amarista was the starting second baseman and Tyson Auer was a reserve outfielder. There were four Kernels pitchers to make the All-Star Game and they were: Mike Kohn, Manuel Flores, Tyler Chatwood, and Ryan Chafee. Only Flores and Kohn have moved on from the Midwest League. The other four players are still with Cedar Rapids.

CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: RHP Christian Scholl was the eighth round pick of the Angels in the 2008 draft out of Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington. Last season, Scholl made 23 appearances – all in relief – for the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League. He was 4-2 with a 2.06ERA and 43 strikeouts in 43-2/3 innings. In 2009, Scholl is 3-2 with a 3.68ERA in 43 appearances (3 starts) for the Kernels. Scholl’s last start for the Kernels was on May 1 against the West Michigan Whitecaps. He tossed five innings, allowed three runs on three hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Scholl’s last outing before tonight was on August 29 against the Peoria Chiefs. He tossed three scoreless and hitless innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Scholl has made five relief appearances against the Timber Rattlers this season. He has pitched a total of 5-1/3 innings and has allowed one run on one hit with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts.
