World Cup of Baseball 2009 -- Day 1 & Day 2 (UPDATED)

Day one was yesterday and the Australians beat the Czechs 17-4 in Prauge.

Chris Snelling ('00) went 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI, and a walk for Aussie!Aussie!Aussie!

Day two is today and the Canadians just beat the South Koreans 9-1. in Sundbyberg, Sweden.

Brett Lawrie ('09) was 1-for-5 with a run.
Jimmy Henderson ('09)* went 1-1/3 innings and struck out four without allowing a hit or a walk for the win.

*That's right...Jimmy Henderson. Check the boxscore.

The US and Venezuela are currently tied 7-7 in the top of the 10th inning in Regensburg, Germany. Jose Escalona ('06 & '08) has pitched four scoreless innings (6th through 9th) with two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts so far for Venezuela.

UPDATE: OUCH!
Team USA suffered a surprise 9-13 loss, blowing a five-run lead in the process. Dirimo Chavez completed the victory with a grand slam in the second extra inning. Rene Reyes had tied the score with another grand slam earlier. Justin Smoak’s two homeruns and five RBI went for nothing.

Day three is Friday and the schedule has Australia vs. Taiwan in Prague; Puerto Rico -- w/ Efrain Nieves ('09) -- vs. Spain in Barcelona; Canada vs. Netherlands Antilles; and USA vs. Germany.
