Ex-Rattlers in Venezuela

SeattleMariners.com has the weekly update on their prospects playing in Venezuela. The highlighted players is Wladimir Balentien (WI '04).

Center fielder Wladimir Balentien, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Mariners in July 2000, is having a fine season for the Cardenales de Lara of the Venezuelan Winter League.

The 22-year-old is riding a four-game hitting streak and has hit safely in eight of his past 10 games. He is 5-for-13 with two home runs, three runs scored and two RBIs during the streak.

On the season, he is batting .279 with nine home runs, 23 RBIs, 20 runs scored and two stolen bases in 38 games.

Here is the website for Cardenales de Lara.

Other ex-Rattlers who have been in action recently:

RHP Rich Dorman -- Since signing with the Seattle organization, the 28-year-old has not made a start. On the season, he is 2-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 11 games (10 starts).

RHP Ivan Blanco -- The 23-year-old reliever has made two appearances over the past week. On Dec. 14, he allowed two runs on three hits while recording two outs. On Tuesday, the Venezuela native surrendered two runs on one hit and one walk while retiring only one batter. On the season, he is 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA in 16 games.

I had not seen anything about Rich Dorman resigning with the Mariners. That's good news for him.

Most of the other ex-Rattlers (Oswaldo Navarro, Jose Escalona, Cibney Bello, and Jon Nelson) down there haven't played for awhile.
