Snappers future in doubt
Land deal failure leaves team with few serious options
Now that a proposed Rock County land swap and with it hopes for a new ballpark have fallen through, the Beloit Snappers' future remains unclear, if not dim.
“We make the decision year by year,” said Snappers board chairman Dennis Conerton of the team's lease with the city for Pohlman Field. “It gets back to the question of how long you'll be here.”
And that is a question Conerton cannot answer.
Although the minor league team has extended its working agreement with the Minnesota Twins through 2008, Conerton said it's no guarantee the Snappers will remain in Beloit - just that it'll stay affiliated with the Twins.
Lots on the land swap that didn't happen and a few other things. But, the big question remains. What is next?
Now that the land swap has sunk, Conerton expects even more inquiries than usual from potential investors because many who follow Minor League Baseball have followed the situation. He receives about three to four each season, he said, and the league office probably gets more than that.
If the team were to be sold, Conerton said any money left over from paying the team's debt would go into a trust fund intended to benefit the Beloit community.
Still, the board's focus has not yet swayed from the Snappers.
“We have to let the dust settle,” Conerton said, “and focus on the immediate opening of the new season.”

You know, I crack on Pohlman Field and the Snappers quite a bit on this blog, but the Midwest League just wouldn't be the same with them.
