In the movie, Seth Maxwell (played by Mac Davis) had just thrown a last second touchdown pass to Phil Elliott (played by Nick Nolte). That score pulled the Bulls to within one point of Chicago. All that was needed was the extra point to tie the game and send the Bulls into overtime.
But, Art Hartman, the backup QB of the Bulls, mishandles the snap and the Bulls lose.
