Winter ball stuff

Jimenez throwing well in winter ball

Left-hander Cesar Jimenez has carried his exceptional regular-season performance with the Cardenales de Lara into the Venezuelan Winter League playoffs.

Jimenez, who was signed as non-drafted free agent by the Seattle Mariners in July 2001, owns one of the Cardenales' three playoff victories. The 5-foot-11 southpaw has surrendered six hits and a walk while striking out two over four scoreless innings spanning four games.

The 22-year-old completed the regular season with a 1-1 record and 0.98 ERA in 15 appearances. He yielded four runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits over 18 1/3 innings, walking six and fanning 12.

Jimenez was a Rattler in 2003. He was the starting pitcher in the first Miller Park game between the Timber Rattlers and the Beloit Snappers.
