Walla Walla lefty holds onto hope for spot in M's bullpen

There aren't many openings on the Seattle roster.

There is at least one, however, in the Mariners bullpen, and Eric O'Flaherty is making sure his name remains in the running.

O'Flaherty pitched in his third spring game Tuesday, throwing two innings of relief to secure Seattle's 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed an unearned run the eighth inning.

He's pitched in three games and a total of four innings. He hasn't allowed an earned run, and he's struck out five while walking none.

The lefty from Walla Walla came up last year when he was 21 after pitching two games with Triple-A Tacoma. He appeared in 15 games and had a 4.09 ERA in 11 innings, walking six and allowing 18 hits.

"Considering he had almost no Triple-A experience, he did an OK job last year," pitching coach Rafael Chaves said. "He'll be better as he gets more experience."
