LAST ACTION: The Rattlers completed a three game sweep of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday, June 17 with a 6-2 victory. Kuo Hui Lo had his third four hit game of the season and drove in two runs for the Rattlers. Trevor Lawhorn also drove in two runs.
STREAK #1: The Rattlers matched their longest winning streak of the season with their three straight wins over the Kernels.
STREAK #2: Justin Souza was the winning pitcher on Sunday for the Timber Rattlers. He is the first Wisconsin pitcher to win consecutive decisions this season. Souza allowed two runs over 3-2/3 innings in relief for the victory.
STREAKS #3 & #4: Carlos Peguero had an RBI grounder in the first inning on Sunday. Peguero has at least one RBI in each of his last five games. Peguero also had two hits on Sunday and has matched his season high hitting streak at seven games.
STREAK #5: Calvin Beamon has been with Wisconsin for three games. He has led off all three games and reached base to start the first inning of all three games at Cedar Rapids.
STREAK #6: Ricky Orta was the Rattler starting pitcher on Sunday. He pitched 3-2/3 innings before reaching his pitch limit. On the 7-game road trip to end the first half, no Timber Rattler starter allowed more than two runs in their time on the hill. The starting pitchers compiled a 1.55 ERA in 40-2/3 innings pitched during that road trip.
STREAK #7: Before heading out on that road trip to end the first half, the Rattlers lost eight straight home games.
ROAD SUCCESS: The Rattlers went 5-2 on that road trip. They split four games at Quad Cities before heading into Cedar Rapids for the three game sweep.
ALL-STAR ACTION: Wisconsin reliever Andrew Barb pitched for the Eastern Division team at the Midwest League All-Star Game Tuesday night in Kane County. Barb pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning as the East won 8-2. Joe Kantakevich did not play in the game.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Swing of the Quad Cities are the Midwest League affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They finished the first half of the season at 38-31 and tied with the Cedar Rapids Kernels for third place in the Western Division. In their final series of the first half, the Swing dropped two out of three games to the Beloit Snappers at home. Quad Cities is 18-16 on the road this season. THE SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers are 3-5 against the Swing this season. Quad Cities swept a four game series from the Rattlers at Grand Chute June 2-5. The Rattlers and Swing split at four game series at John O’Donnell Stadium June 11-14. The teams will complete their season series when they face each other June 29 through July 2 in Davenport, Iowa.
PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA has placed three members of the current Quad Cities roster on their list of top 30 St. Louis Cardinal prospects. Outfielder Daryl Jones, the third round pick in the 2005 draft out of Spring (TX) High School, is the highest ranked Swing at #10. Pitcher Tyler Herron, a supplemental first round pick in 2005, checks in at #18. The final Quad Cities player on BA’s list is pitcher Brad Furnish, a second round pick out of TCU in 2006, at #23.
MOVING OUT: Quad Cities lost Brandon Buckman (.341, 14HR, 52RBI) and PJ Walters (6-1, 2.62ERA) to promotions after the All-Star Game on Tuesday. Tommy Pham, a top prospect in the St. Louis organization, has been sent to Batavia of the New York-Penn League.
OPPOSING STARTER: Tyler Herron was the 46th player picked in the 2005 draft. The supplemental first round selection out of Wellington (FL) High School was 5-10 with a 4.67 in 27 starts over two seasons as a professional. He started the 2007 season 0-4 in his first seven appearances. Since then he is 6-0 with a save over nine appearances (five starts). He has faced the Timber Rattlers twice and is 1-0 with a save. Herron has pitched six innings over two relief appearances and has allowed one unearned run on four hits with no walks and ten strikeouts.
SECOND SWING PITCHER: Left Brad Furnish is the second part of the Quad Cities pitching tandem tonight. Furnish is 1-0 in two starts against Wisconsin this season. He has given up two runs one earned) over ten innings with ten strikeouts and two walks.
