April 21, 2010: Game notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Kernels beat the Timber Rattlers 7-6 in ten innings. Luis Jimenez tied the game with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth. Cedar Rapids scored the winning run in the top of the tenth on a throwing error.

THERE WILL BE RUNNING: The Kernels stole four bases in the first inning. Mike Trout and Jean Segura each stole two bases. The Kernels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Cedar Rapids is 20-for-25 in stolen base attempts this season.

SIX UNANSWERED: The Rattlers rallied back with a run in the first, three runs in the second, and two more in the third to take a 6-2 lead.

DAVIS FOR SEVEN: Khris Davis doubled in the first inning to drive in a run. That hit by Davis extended his current hitting streak to seven games. Davis is 13-for-31 (.419). He has tied Scooter Gennett for the longest hitting streak on the team this season.

DOUBLE DIGITS: The Rattler offense collected 11 hits last night. Wisconsin has banged out 10 or more hits in five of their last seven games.

RIGHTING THE SHIP: Wisconsin starting pitcher Damon Krestalude allowed those two runs in the first inning. Over the next four innings, he did not allow another run. Krestalude struck out four and gave up three hits in his five innings of work. He left with a 6-2 lead.

BACK CAME THE KERNELS: A two-run homer by Randal Grichuk in the sixth inning got the Kernels to within 6-4.

FIRST OF THE SEASON: Last night was the first extra inning game of the season for the Rattlers. In 2009, Wisconsin played seven extra innings games and went 3-4 in those games.

OLD HAT: The Kernels have already played three extra inning games this season and are 2-1. They have played two straight that have gone past regulation. On April 19 at Kane County, they won 6-3 at Kane County.

YOUR FACT OF THE DAY: The home run by Grichuk was the second of the season for the Kernels. South Bend also has two homers in 2010. Peoria has the fewest homers in the Midwest League with one.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .279 as a team. They have scored 70 runs (5.4/game) and hit 7 home runs. The Kernels are hitting .259 as a team. They have scored 64 runs (4.9/game) and hit two home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.34 while allowing a total of 72 runs (5.5/game) this season. Cedar Rapids pitchers have a team ERA of 3.16 while allowing 49 runs (3.8/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 26 errors. The Kernels defense has committed 10 errors. Wisconsin is 3-4 at Time Warner Cable Field this season. Cedar Rapids is 3-4 on the road this season.

CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: RHP Orangel Arenas was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela in 2007. He spent two seasons in the Dominican Summer League before making his US debut with the Orem Owlz in 2009. He was 4-3 with a 4.65ERA in 15 startsfor the Owlz. In his last start, Arenas gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits over five innings against Peoria on April 16. Arenas took the loss. Today is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers. Arenas did make a pair of starts against Helena in 2009. He went 1-0 and allowed two runs on five hits over 12 innings with four walks and nine strikeouts.
