April 22, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT WEDNESDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Kernels 5-2. Pete Fatse went 3-for-4 with a homer, a triple, and three RBI to lead the Rattlers offense. Efrain Nieves picked up the win with four innings of scoreless relief.

THERE WAS MORE RUNNING: The Kernels stole four bases in the first inning for the second straight game. Cedar Rapids also got a stolen base in the in the seventh inning for five steals in the game. In the first two games of this series, the Kernels have nine steals.

DOWN EARLY: The Kernels grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi. A two-run single by Luis Jimenez with two outs gave the Kernels a two run first inning for the second game in a row.

SETTLE DOWN: Odorizzi allowed two runs, two hits, and two walks in the first inning. He allowed one more walk and one more hit over his next three innings. Odorizzi struck out seven in his four innings of work.

CAN’T KEEP A GOOD TEAM DOWN: The Rattlers scratched for two runs in the second inning to tie the game. Fatse homered with two outs in the sixth to break the tie. Fatse drove in two more runs in the eighth inning with a triple.

MARK IT DOWN: Nieves, who struggled in his first two starts of the 2010 season, pitched four scoreless innings in relief to get the win. He allowed two hits and struck out two.

TIPTOEING THROUGH THE MINEFIELD: Three Timber Rattlers pitchers walked eight Kernels batters yesterday. Chad Robinson walked three in the ninth, but kept Cedar Rapids off the board for his first save of the season.

SILVER STREAKS: Khris Davis singled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Fatse is now on a seven game hitting streak. Chris Dennis doubled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to six games. Davis has the longest hitting streak on the team in 2010 and is 14-for-35 (.400) in his last eight games. Fatse is 14-for-25 (.560) and Dennis is 8-for-22 (.364) on their streaks.

YOUR FACT OF THE DAY: The Rattlers hitters had 10 hits yesterday. The offense has reached at least 10 hits in six of the last eight games to raise their team batting average to .282. The Rattlers were hitting .251 before this stretch of games.

2010 SEASON SERIES: The teams have split the first two games in their 2010 series. The Kernels visit Wisconsin again May 7-9. The game on Friday, May 7 is at Miller Park.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .282 as a team. They have scored 75 runs (5.4/game) and hit 8 home runs. The Kernels are hitting .253 as a team. They have scored 66 runs (4.7/game) and hit two home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.16 while allowing a total of 74 runs (5.3/game) this season. CEDAR RAPIDS STARTING PITCHER: LHP Tyler Kehrer was a supplemental first round pick (48th overall) in the 2009 draft out of Eastern Illinois University. He went 3-3 with a 4.75ERA and 57 strikeouts over 55 innings in 14 starts for the Orem Owlz in 2009. In his last start for the Kernels, Kehrer allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in 2-1/3 innings at Kane County on April 17. He was not involved in the decision. Tonight is Kehrer’s first appearance against the Rattlers. Last season with Orem, Kehrer faced Helena, the Pioneer League affiliate of the Brewers. He pitched six scoreless innings and allowed two hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Kehrer is rated as the # 18 prospect in the Angels organization by Baseball America.
