The Cleveland Indians also handed out their awards, with Asdrubal Cabrera ('05) winning the Lou Boudreau Award winner as the top position player in the club's player development system. The complete Cleveland release is HERE. Quick excerpts:
The 22-year-old Cabrera, who was named the Tribe's Lou Boudreau Award winner as the top position player in the club's player development system, was a sparkplug for the team in the last two months of the regular season after he was called up. It's questionable whether the Indians would have surged to an eight-game lead in the American League Central standings without his work at second base and in the No. 2 position of the lineup.
...Cabrera came into the season as one of the Indians' more promising middle infield prospects. But he actually was downgraded a level -- beginning at Double-A Akron after spending the previous year in Triple-A -- so he could focus on improving his offensive game.
Did he ever.
Cabrera hit .310 with 78 runs scored, 23 doubles, three triples, eight homers and 54 RBIs in 96 games at Akron, all while playing a predictably solid shortstop. He was named to both the midseason and postseason Eastern League All-Star squads.
