David Ortiz (WI '96) is now a Five time! Five time! Five time! Five time! Five time! winner of the Edgar Martinez award. That is the award that goes to the best designated hitter in the AL each year.

Red Sox masher first DH to win accolade five straight years

David Ortiz might not only be the best designated hitter in the game. He might be the best since the inception of the rule in 1973. It was announced Tuesday that Big Papi -- the left-handed masher of the Boston Red Sox -- was the winner of Major League Baseball's Edgar Martinez Award for the fifth straight year.

Former Mariner DH Edgar Martinez also won the award five time, just not consecutively, and it wasn't named the Edgar Martinez award at the time.
