Brewers 12, Cardinals 6

Boxscore

Late run surge gives Crew improbable victory
The fates of the two starting pitchers showed how bizarrely this game turned around.

Milwaukee's Braden Looper exited after six innings, trailing, 6-1, yet became the Brewers' first 14-game winner since Cal Eldred - a pregame visitor - in 1993.

St. Louis' Adam Wainwright departed in the seventh inning with that same 6-1 margin yet was denied becoming the only 20-game winner in the major leagues this season.

That's how dramatically the game changed at Busch Stadium on Friday night.

"It was a crazy game without a doubt," said infielder Craig Counsell, as the Brewers reveled in the visiting clubhouse after stunning the Cardinals, 12-6, in perhaps their most improbable victory of the season.

"We took some advantage of things. The game seemed to turn pretty fast. The vibe in the stadium totally changed."

Some of those "things" included five wild pitches, most by St. Louis since 1954, including four that scored runs. The Cardinals also committed errors on two run-scoring plays as the bullpen and defense took some fine work by Wainwright and sprayed graffiti all over it.
