50 Years Ago Today:

Des Moines Demons 12
Fox Cities Foxes 5

Headline: Demons collect 17 hits in front of Baltimore Farm Director Jim McLaughlin

From the story:
Chills must have run up and down McLaughlin's spine when John Powell, big bonus first baseman, was struck in the head by a hot grounder off the bat of Gene Kearns in the fourth inning. The 6-4, 235 pound youngster was knocked prone and lay in his tracks for five minutes or so while players from both teams clustered around.

He was helped off the field by several teammates, examined by a physician, and watched the last part of the contest from the stands.
The Foxes are 70-42 and still have a comfortable lead on second place Sioux City in the Three-I League.
