May 3, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Snappers 8-3. Scooter Gennett homered and drove in three runs for Wisconsin. The Rattlers had 12 hits and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win.

END OF THE LINE: The win snapped Wisconsin’s season high seven-game hitting streak.

BACK TO EVEN: Gennett and Pete Fatse each had RBI doubles in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2.

A BETTER SEASON HIGH: The Rattlers broke a 2-2 tie by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning. The five runs in the inning were the most by the Rattlers in 2010. All five runs scored after there were two outs.

ANATOMY OF A RALLY: Michael Marseco was on second base with two outs and D’Vontrey Richardson at the plate in the seventh inning. Marseco stole third and scored on a single by Richardson. Gennett followed with a homer to right-center. Khris Davis walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Pete Fatse doubled in Davis. Fatse stole third and scored on a throwing error.

SCOOTER’S BIG DAY: Gennett’s homer was his first as a professional.

A NOTE ABOUT THE PITCHERS: Three Wisconsin pitchers combined to hold Beloit to four hits and three runs (two earned). Starting pitcher Damon Krestalude allowed two runs on two hits in five innings and pitched around four walks. Jon Pokorny won his second game of the season and gave up one unearned run on one hit in two innings. Andre Lamontagne allowed one hit over the final two innings to close out the Snappers.

THIS IS JUST WEIRD: Beloit has scored at least run in the second inning in four straight games against the Rattlers.

ROSTER MOVES: Rattlers infielder Joey Paciorek has been placed on the disabled list. The Milwaukee Brewers have transferred Cutter Dykstra from extended spring training to the Wisconsin roster to take Paciorek’s place. The active roster for Wisconsin remains at 25.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers at the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They are 14-9 and in third place in the Western Division. In their most recent series, the Snappers took two out of three games at Burlington.

2010 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin is 1-4 against Beloit this season. The Snappers defeated the Timber Rattlers 7-2 and 7-5 at Time Warner Cable Field on April 23 and 24. The game that was scheduled for Sunday, April 25 was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on May 14.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .261 as a team. They have scored 115 runs (5.0/game) and hit 10 home runs. The Snappers are hitting .242 as a team. They have scored 98 runs (4.3/game) and hit 16 home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.74 while allowing a total of 123 runs (5.3/game) this season. Beloit pitchers have a team ERA of 2.98 while allowing 80 runs (3.5/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 41 errors. The Snappers defense has committed 24 errors. Wisconsin is 3-9 away from Time Warner Cable Field this season. Beloit is 7-5 at Pohlman Field this season.

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RHP Brad Stillings, who is out of Kent State, was the seventh round pick of the Twins in the 2009 draft. He was 6-4 with a 7.52 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched for the Golden Flashes. Stillings also threw a no-hitter for Kent State against the University of Toledo on April 10, 2009. Stillings started his pro career with the Elizabethton Twins after the draft and went 0-1 with a 4.19 ERA in ten games (six starts). He was promoted to the Snappers and appeared in seven games as a reliever without a record and a 5.73ERA. In his last start prior to today, Stillings allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits over two innings at Burlington on April 27 and took the loss. Stillings, a college teammate of Rattlers reliever Jon Pokorny, has faced the Rattlers once. He made a relief appearance against Wisconsin on September 6, 2009 and allowed an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings.

CEDAR RAPIDS..4
FOX CITIES....6

John Papa was the winning pitcher and struck out 11, but a future Orioles manager played a key role in this comeback win by the Foxes.

Fox Cities trailed the game 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth and Cal Ripken, Sr. was having a tough night at Goodland Field. He had committed an error and was charged with two passed balls.

In the seventh, he stepped to the plate and, I'll let Mike Drew take it away:
The veteran catcher banged a two-run double in the seventh to put the Foxes up to stay.
On top of that, Drew reveals that Charlie Johnson, who hit the winning homer against Burlington on May 2, used Ripken's bat for the tremendous clout. (Drew didn't write that. I was just getting the spirit of the thing).

Interesting note from the notes section after the main story. Three umpires worked the game. The game up in Green Bay had been postponed and ump George Sosnak, who was supposed to work that game, drove down to Appleton to keep busy.

Sosnak is an interesting story in and of himself.
Sosnak had always enjoyed painting, but he had an odd request while he was umpiring a game in Idaho in 1956. A female fan asked if he could paint a baseball featuring her favorite ball player. Sosnak obliged; he always obliged.

The painting of baseballs began from that simple request and then became a viable outlet for Sosnak to share his passion for the game of baseball. Sosnak’s work slowly grew to cult-like popularity, and demand soon followed for his work. The demand came from all directions – politicians, baseball players, batboys, fans, presidents, baseball owners, hospitals, foreign dignitaries, charity groups, churches, sportswriters, managers and anyone who would simply ask. Sosnak was not one to turn anyone down. Oftentimes, players sought out his services at spring training games in Florida when he was umpiring. He was sometimes paid for the work. However, he would often finish a baseball and simply present it to the player, person or organization as a gift.

If he had a favorite team, it was the Detroit Tigers. There is an unusually large array of Tigers-related work among his finished work. Sosnak was an umpire for several years at the Tigers spring training site, and he ultimately settled in Lakeland, Fla. He would also attend the Annual Florida Governors dinner, and there are many works featuring players and politicians that he met through this venue. In typical fashion, he would get an item signed at the dinner and then start his research to lay the foundation for his next creation.
Click that link to see the whole story. This really cool Bill Mazerowski ball up at the top is the work of Sosnak.

The win was the second straight for the Foxes. They are 2-4 on the season at this point.

The Foxes beat up on the Twins and put the game away with a 6-run seventh inning. But it was a homer early in the game that gave the Foxes some breathing room. Jim Markert hit a three-run homer on a 3-2 pitch and moved the score from 4-3 Appleton to 7-3 Appleton.

Troy Thomas was a big part of the offense, too. He had three hits and three RBI for the Foxes.

Appleton's win moved their record to 13-8 and it came in front of their biggest crowd of the season...to date.

What my gut tells me (5/2/10)

WIS 8
BEL 3

Boxscore | Game story

I'm not a big believer in one moment turning around a season, but my gut tells me that a walk issued by Damon Krestalude in the bottom of the fifth inning turned Sunday's game around.

Here is the situation: The Rattlers are down 2-0 in the fifth. Runner at first one out and a 2-2 pitch is due to James Beresford, the #9 hitter for the Snappers. Krestalude misses on the pitch. And everyone is thinking that the count should be 3-2.

The plate umpire awarded first base to Beresford.

Now, I have seen a ball called on a pitcher with out throwing a pitch, but it usually involves him putting his hand to his mouth while still on the mound. And I will apologize if that was the call and I missed it, but I am almost positive that was not the call. Beresford got first base on a three-ball walk.

After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that the call would stand. Two on with one out.

I can't tell you how many times I have seen a call like that throw a pitcher at this level completely off his game.

Krestalude got the ball after the delay and struck out Twins uber-prospect Aaron Hicks. Then, he got #2 hitter Brian Dozier to popup to end the inning.

My gut tells me that a reaction like that gets noticed. That reaction in similar situations in the future will take Krestalude a long way.

By coincidence, the Rattlers scored twice in the top of the sixth and five times in the seventh to snap that stupid losing streak.

Nice job by the Rattlers to get the win today.

Get em' again tomorrow.

May 2, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Beloit swept a doubleheader from the Timber Rattlers at Pohlman Field. The Snappers won game one 5-1 behind a three-run homer by Anderson Hidalgo and the pitching of Liam Hendriks. In game two, Daniel Osterbrock tossed a seven inning no-hitter for Beloit.

GAME ONE RECAP: Hendriks held the Rattlers to one run on five hits and struck out six over six innings for the win. Danny Rams drove in Beloit’s first run with a double in the second inning. The Snappers added four more runs (three on the blast by Hidalgo) in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-0. Scooter Gennett doubled in the sixth and would later score on a sacrifice fly by Pete Fatse for Wisconsin’s only run.

GAME TWO RECAP: Osterbrock retired the first 18 batters he faced before walking D’Vontrey Richardson to lead off the seventh. The lefty out of the University of Cincinnati got Gennett to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and Khris Davis to pop out to second to end the game. Osterbrock struck out seven in the game. The Snappers got their runs on a two-out RBI single in the second by James Beresford; and an RBI single by Steve Liddle, a throwing error, and an RBI double by Michael Gonzales in the fifth.

THE BIG O: Osterbrock has made five starts against Wisconsin over the last two seasons. He is 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA (five earned runs over 33 innings) and two complete games. Osterbrock has walked three Rattlers and struck out 37 over those five starts. Over that same time period against the rest of the Midwest League, Osterbrock is 4-11 with a 5.55 ERA.

THE LAST TIME: The last time the Timber Rattlers were no-hit also occurred in the second game of a doubleheader. Johnny Cueto of the Dayton Dragons no-hit the Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field in a game shortened to five innings on May 13, 2006. The only other time Wisconsin has been no-hit was by Dusty Hughes (8IP) and Jake Mullis (1IP) on April 12, 2004 at Burlington.

FACT OF THE DAY: The last time an Appleton baseball team was no-hit by a single pitcher over a nine inning game on June 18, 1991 by Geoffrey Kellogg of the Beloit Brewers.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers at the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They are 14-8 and in third place in the Western Division. In their most recent series, the Snappers took two out of three games at Burlington.

2009 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin and Beloit split a 14 game series last season. The Rattlers were 2-4 against the Snappers at Pohlman Field in 2009. The Snappers swept the Rattlers at Pohlman Field over Labor Day weekend in the final three games played between the teams last season.

2010 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin is 0-4 against Beloit this season. The Snappers defeated the Timber Rattlers 7-2 and 7-5 at Time Warner Cable Field on April 23 and 24. The game that was scheduled for Sunday, April 25 was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on May 14.

Profiling Efrain Nieves

The Post Crescent has profiled Rattlers pitcher Efrain Nieves.
Q: You mentioned Roberto Clemente as being one of your favorite players growing up. Is he still revered in your native Puerto Rico?

A: Definitely. Not only in our country, but I think in Nicaragua, too. That's where he tried to help the people out (at the time of his plane crash). He's a huge hero down in Puerto Rico. Growing up, having that role model — not only was he a great player, but a great human being.

The Fox Cities Foxes finally got a game in after four straight rainouts (Two in Cedar Rapids and two at home against Burlington). And they finally got in the win column. But they did not get completely away from the rain.

This was supposed to be a doubleheader against Burlington, but game two was rained out in the third inning with Burlington leading 3-0. Since this was the final meeting of the series at Goodland Field (I need to go back and correct those last two days because I misread the schedule in my notebook. The first two days of this series were in Appleton).

To the game:

FC..5
BUR 4

Charlie Johnson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put the Foxes ahead 5-4. Dean Chance pitched a complete game for the win.

Interesting promotional note from the PC story:
Four live baby foxes, secured by Ray McClone, were among the prizes distributed to fans last night.
Wow. PETA just retroactively sued the 1960 Fox Cities Foxes. Think we could give away four live baby Timber Rattlers at a game later this season? (I almost went with baby snakes, but I don't know if there are that many Frank Zappa fans who read Rattler Radio)

The Foxes are 1-4 on the 1960 season after that win.

PC Headline: Long night for Foxes in 12-3 loss

PC Lede:
It was a long night for the Appleton Foxes, but a short one for Manager Sal Rende.

The Madison Muskies pounded 4 Appleton pitchers in a 12-3 victory at Goodland Field, however, Rende watched most of the game from the stands after being ejected in the third inning.

The loss drops the Foxes (12-8) 5-1/2 games behind the Muskies (18-3) in the Midwest League's Northern Division.
Rende has some advice that is pertinent even today...
"It's not something that we are going to dwell on," said Rende. "We didn't play a very good game, and they did. A team is going to have its share of these games during a season. I'm sure we'll be on the long end of a number of them before the year is over."

Happy Golden Anniversary

You all know that I enjoy stories like these. Mr. Batterson has hit the bull's eye.

Q-C reaches 50 years in the Midwest League
Professional baseball traces its origins in the Quad-Cities region to 1879, but Davenport found itself without a minor-league team when the Davenport Sox, a Three-I League affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, moved to Lincoln, Neb., after the 1958 season.

Local businessman Hugo "Hooks" Kohn started a drive to return a team to Davenport's riverfront baseball stadium, and months later, the Quad-City Baseball Fans Association was formed.

The group raised funds, volunteered time and was successful in its attempt to "keep the lights burning" at what was then known as Municipal Stadium.

Kohn convinced a co-worker at a downtown office building, Doris Krucker, to assist him as the secretary of the organization. She recalled that 13 people braved a snowstorm on the night of the group's first meeting.

"People wanted baseball," Krucker said. "We collected $1 from everybody in attendance, and that $13 was our start."

Ah, after a night like tonight, there is only one thing that I can say. It is an old Scottish saying...and do not for a moment let anyone tell you that the Irish had this saying.

I am sore wounded but not slain
I will lay me down and bleed a while
And then rise up to fight again.

Get them tomorrow.

NICE WAY TO GO OUT: Heckathorn’s last start for Kennesaw State was against North Florida on May 14, 2009. He pitched nine innings and allowed four runs as he scattered 11 hits. What made the start particularly memorable was that he set a school record for strikeouts in a game as he K’ed 15 North Florida batters. Heckathorn, who walked just one in the game, was not involved in the decision, a 6-5 win for the Owls in 11 innings.

HONORED: Louisville Slugger recognized Heckathorn as one of their National Players of the Week for his performance on May 14 against North Florida.

POST-SEASON REWARD: The Atlantic Sun Conference named Heckathorn to their All-Conference team after the 2009 season.

In three games with the Stars, Bucci went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. However, two of those appearances for Huntsville were scoreless.

O, CANADA! Bucci pitched for Team Canada in the 2009 World Cup of baseball and helped them to the bronze medal in the competition. It was Canada’s first medal in the World Cup.

LEAGUE AWARD: The Pioneer League recognized Bucci as their pitcher of the week on July 20 for his performance for the week of July 13-19.

May 1, 2010: Game Notes

LAST ACTION: The Peoria Chiefs beat the Timber Rattlers 8-7. Jonathan Mota drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth. Mota had three RBI for the Chiefs.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers game at Beloit was rained out. It is being made up as part of a doubleheader today.

RECENT SUCCESS: Wisconsin has had one doubleheader this season. They swept a pair from the Kane County Cougars at Time Warner Cable Field on April 9 after Opening Night on April 8 was snowed out.

RECENT PAST: This is the first road doubleheader for the Rattlers since June 20, 2009. They split a pair of seven inning games at Kane County on that day. The Rattlers had two other road doubleheaders in 2009. They were swept at Quad Cities on April 27 and they split with Cedar Rapids on May 14.

DISTANT PAST: This is the first doubleheader at Beloit for the Timber Rattlers since April 18, 2003. Wisconsin split that doubleheader. Bobby Livingston took the loss for the Rattlers in game one. Oscar Delgado won game two for Wisconsin.

LOW FIVE: The Timber Rattlers enter the doubleheader today with a five game losing streak.

ADVENTURES IN BASE RUNNING: The Rattlers had a total of nine runners cut down on the base paths during their three game series in Peoria.

FACT OF THE DAY:
The Timber Rattlers were 7-5 in six doubleheaders in 2009. They swept two, split three, and were swept in one.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .266 as a team. They have scored 106 runs (5.3/game) and hit nine home runs. The Snappers are hitting .244 as a team. They have scored 86 runs (4.2/game) and hit 14 home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.80 while allowing a total of 111 runs (5.6/game) this season. Beloit pitchers have a team ERA of 3.01 while allowing 78 runs (3.6/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 34 errors. The Snappers defense has committed 21 errors. Wisconsin is 2-7 away from Time Warner Cable Field this season. Beloit is 5-4 at Pohlman Field this season.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed four members of the current Beloit roster on their list of Top 30 Prospects in the Minnesota Twins organization before the 2010 season. Outfielder Aaron Hicks is the #1 prospect in the Minnesota organization. Outfielder Angel Morales (#8) is also a top 10 prospect. Pitcher Ben Tootle (#28) and infielder James Beresford (#30) are also on the list.

GAME ONE BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RHP Liam Hendriks was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Australia in 2007 by the Twins. In 2007, Hendriks was 4-2 with a 2.05ERA for the Gulf Coast League Twins. He missed all of 2008 with an injury and began the 2009 season with Elizabethton in the Appalachian League. Hendriks went 2-0 in three starts with Elizabethton and was promoted to Beloit. As a Snapper, Hendriks went 3-5 in 11 starts with a 3.51ERA and 62 strikeouts over 66-2/3 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on 12 hits and struck out 22 while walking just one over 19 innings against Wisconsin in 2009. He is the reigning Midwest League pitcher of the Week.

Two no-hitters, one night (IMPORTANT UPDATE)

If you clicked on either the Peoria or Cedar Rapids story in the Midwest League post this morning, you saw that right. Two no-hitters in the MWL last night.

The last time I remember two no-hitters on the same night was June 29, 1990.

Dave Stewart of the Oakland A's no-hit the Blue Jays in Toronto. Later that night, Fernando Valenzuela pitched a no-no for the Dodgers over the St. Louis Cardinals in Los Angeles.

The fact-checkers in Peoria found this little gem and put it up on their twitter feed...before the Kernels no-hitter was official:
The only other time in MWL history there were 2 no-nos on the same day it was also the Chiefs and @CRKernels. 7/10/87. Finish it off CR!
Of course, @CRKernels (and @jeje66) spat in the face of baseball tradition by continually mentioning the no-hitter. Maybe that's what I did wrong in Burlington earlier this month.

The pitchers of those no-hitters on July 10, 1987 were:

CR: Mike Converse (vs. Kenosha)
PEO: Jeff Schwarz (vs. Kenosha)...

...
.......

What?

That Cedar Rapids information is from this post at Jeff Johnson's blog. The Peoria information is from MWL Guide's 1987 Highlight's. Joel's entry mentioned nothing about two no-hitters on the same day.

My MWL Record Book is at the ballpark. I'll be over there in about an hour and I will try to get to the bottom of this mystery. Consider this post to be updated by 11:30.

Meanwhile, just enjoy the final out from Cedar Rapids as the Kernels no-hit Kane County.

My favorite things about the video.

The crowd noise
The pitcher coming out of the dugout for the handshake line who give the fist pump
The player who does the double take after realizing that he just slapped five with a man dressed up as an ear of corn.

UPDATE: 11:15am.

I just checked my Midwest League Record Book. It has the following entries under the NO-HIT GAMES

Mike Converse, Cedar Rapids vs. Kenosha, 4-0, July 10, 1987
Jeff Schwarz, Peoria vs. Kenosha, 4-0, July 10, 1987

The Baseball Reference entry for Schwarz has him as a Peoria Chief in 1987. He was on his third time through the Midwest League. Schwarz did make the majors with the White Sox in 1993-1994. He also pitched for the Angels in 1994.

The Baseball Reference entry for Converse has him as member of the Cedar Rapids Reds, but in 1986. The 6'-9" righty was 7-13 for the Reds in '86. He would pitch for Tampa in the Florida State League in 1987, but was let go after the season.

The mystery is solved. I went back to the 1986 Highlights at Joel's Midwest League Guide and found this entry:
  • June 6, 1986
    • Mike Converse (Cedar Rapids) No hitter; Beloit, 2-0
Great story from last night, but now - thanks to a typo/mistake in the media Guide - we know that it's even better. Last night was the first time there have ever been two no-hitters thrown on the same date in Midwest League History.

May 1, 1960 & May 1, 1985

50 years ago today:

The Fox Cities Foxes were postponed in Burlington due to wet grounds. This marks the fourth consecutive day the Foxes had a game postponed. The first two were in Cedar Rapids. The last two were in Burlington.

Earl Weaver's team is 0-4 as they head home to Goodland Field to play some baseball.

POST-CRESCENT HEADLINE: Foxes bow, 1-0, on unearned run

The winning rally (taken from Gary Shriver's game story):
The Muskies scored in the sixth. Felix Jose was safe on an error by second baseman [Jerry] Bertolani. [John] Kanter forced Jose at second, moved up on Roy Anderson's swinging-bunt single and scored on [Pat] Dietrick's single to right center.
Steve Oswald was the starter for the Foxes. He went 7-1/3 innings, allowed the unearned run, gave up six hits, walked three and struck out four.

But, he took the loss as the Foxes stranded 11 runners in the game.

Appleton is 12-7. They are 4.5 games behind the 17-3 Muskies in the Northern Division.

From the FOXES TALES part of the story:
The Foxes completed the month of April without a single [home] rainout, an unusual if not unprecedented occurance. Foxes officials credit the new tarpaulin for saving at least two games.
Remember, there was no tarp for Goodland Field before the 1985 season. That topic was covered a bit in this article.
