May 3, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT SUNDAY: The Timber Rattlers beat the Snappers 8-3. Scooter Gennett homered and drove in three runs for Wisconsin. The Rattlers had 12 hits and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win.

END OF THE LINE: The win snapped Wisconsin’s season high seven-game hitting streak.

BACK TO EVEN: Gennett and Pete Fatse each had RBI doubles in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 2-2.

A BETTER SEASON HIGH: The Rattlers broke a 2-2 tie by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning. The five runs in the inning were the most by the Rattlers in 2010. All five runs scored after there were two outs.

ANATOMY OF A RALLY: Michael Marseco was on second base with two outs and D’Vontrey Richardson at the plate in the seventh inning. Marseco stole third and scored on a single by Richardson. Gennett followed with a homer to right-center. Khris Davis walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Pete Fatse doubled in Davis. Fatse stole third and scored on a throwing error.

SCOOTER’S BIG DAY: Gennett’s homer was his first as a professional.

A NOTE ABOUT THE PITCHERS: Three Wisconsin pitchers combined to hold Beloit to four hits and three runs (two earned). Starting pitcher Damon Krestalude allowed two runs on two hits in five innings and pitched around four walks. Jon Pokorny won his second game of the season and gave up one unearned run on one hit in two innings. Andre Lamontagne allowed one hit over the final two innings to close out the Snappers.

THIS IS JUST WEIRD: Beloit has scored at least run in the second inning in four straight games against the Rattlers.

ROSTER MOVES: Rattlers infielder Joey Paciorek has been placed on the disabled list. The Milwaukee Brewers have transferred Cutter Dykstra from extended spring training to the Wisconsin roster to take Paciorek’s place. The active roster for Wisconsin remains at 25.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers at the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They are 14-9 and in third place in the Western Division. In their most recent series, the Snappers took two out of three games at Burlington.

2010 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin is 1-4 against Beloit this season. The Snappers defeated the Timber Rattlers 7-2 and 7-5 at Time Warner Cable Field on April 23 and 24. The game that was scheduled for Sunday, April 25 was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on May 14.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .261 as a team. They have scored 115 runs (5.0/game) and hit 10 home runs. The Snappers are hitting .242 as a team. They have scored 98 runs (4.3/game) and hit 16 home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.74 while allowing a total of 123 runs (5.3/game) this season. Beloit pitchers have a team ERA of 2.98 while allowing 80 runs (3.5/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 41 errors. The Snappers defense has committed 24 errors. Wisconsin is 3-9 away from Time Warner Cable Field this season. Beloit is 7-5 at Pohlman Field this season.

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RHP Brad Stillings, who is out of Kent State, was the seventh round pick of the Twins in the 2009 draft. He was 6-4 with a 7.52 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched for the Golden Flashes. Stillings also threw a no-hitter for Kent State against the University of Toledo on April 10, 2009. Stillings started his pro career with the Elizabethton Twins after the draft and went 0-1 with a 4.19 ERA in ten games (six starts). He was promoted to the Snappers and appeared in seven games as a reliever without a record and a 5.73ERA. In his last start prior to today, Stillings allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits over two innings at Burlington on April 27 and took the loss. Stillings, a college teammate of Rattlers reliever Jon Pokorny, has faced the Rattlers once. He made a relief appearance against Wisconsin on September 6, 2009 and allowed an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout in two innings.
