May 2, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Beloit swept a doubleheader from the Timber Rattlers at Pohlman Field. The Snappers won game one 5-1 behind a three-run homer by Anderson Hidalgo and the pitching of Liam Hendriks. In game two, Daniel Osterbrock tossed a seven inning no-hitter for Beloit.

GAME ONE RECAP: Hendriks held the Rattlers to one run on five hits and struck out six over six innings for the win. Danny Rams drove in Beloit’s first run with a double in the second inning. The Snappers added four more runs (three on the blast by Hidalgo) in the bottom of the fourth to go up 5-0. Scooter Gennett doubled in the sixth and would later score on a sacrifice fly by Pete Fatse for Wisconsin’s only run.

GAME TWO RECAP: Osterbrock retired the first 18 batters he faced before walking D’Vontrey Richardson to lead off the seventh. The lefty out of the University of Cincinnati got Gennett to ground into a 4-6-3 double play and Khris Davis to pop out to second to end the game. Osterbrock struck out seven in the game. The Snappers got their runs on a two-out RBI single in the second by James Beresford; and an RBI single by Steve Liddle, a throwing error, and an RBI double by Michael Gonzales in the fifth.

THE BIG O: Osterbrock has made five starts against Wisconsin over the last two seasons. He is 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA (five earned runs over 33 innings) and two complete games. Osterbrock has walked three Rattlers and struck out 37 over those five starts. Over that same time period against the rest of the Midwest League, Osterbrock is 4-11 with a 5.55 ERA.

THE LAST TIME: The last time the Timber Rattlers were no-hit also occurred in the second game of a doubleheader. Johnny Cueto of the Dayton Dragons no-hit the Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field in a game shortened to five innings on May 13, 2006. The only other time Wisconsin has been no-hit was by Dusty Hughes (8IP) and Jake Mullis (1IP) on April 12, 2004 at Burlington.

FACT OF THE DAY: The last time an Appleton baseball team was no-hit by a single pitcher over a nine inning game on June 18, 1991 by Geoffrey Kellogg of the Beloit Brewers.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers at the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. They are 14-8 and in third place in the Western Division. In their most recent series, the Snappers took two out of three games at Burlington.

2009 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin and Beloit split a 14 game series last season. The Rattlers were 2-4 against the Snappers at Pohlman Field in 2009. The Snappers swept the Rattlers at Pohlman Field over Labor Day weekend in the final three games played between the teams last season.

2010 SEASON SERIES: Wisconsin is 0-4 against Beloit this season. The Snappers defeated the Timber Rattlers 7-2 and 7-5 at Time Warner Cable Field on April 23 and 24. The game that was scheduled for Sunday, April 25 was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on May 14.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .257 as a team. They have scored 107 runs (4.9/game) and hit nine home runs. The Snappers are hitting .247 as a team. They have scored 95 runs (4.3/game) and hit 15 home runs. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.88 while allowing a total of 120 runs (5.5/game) this season. Beloit pitchers have a team ERA of 2.84 while allowing 79 runs (3.6/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 38 errors. The Snappers defense has committed 22 errors. Wisconsin is 2-9 away from Time Warner Cable Field this season. Beloit is 7-4 at Pohlman Field this season.

BELOIT STARTING PITCHER: RHP Miguel Munoz was signed by the Twins as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela in 2005. He appeared in the Venezuelan Summer League in 2006 and the Dominican Summer League in 2007. Munoz made his US professional debut in the Gulf Coast League in 2008 and was 5-2 with a 3.09ERA. In 2009, Munoz went 5-4 with a 4.96ERA in 13 starts with Elizabethton, the Appalachian League affiliate of the Twins. He has no record with a 2.75 ERA in four starts for the Snappers this season. In his start prior to today, he allowed three runs on four hits over six innings at Burlington on April 26. Munoz walked one and struck out eight in a no decision in that game. Today is his first appearance against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and his first appearance against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
