June 10, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT WEDNESDAY: The Rattlers split a doubleheader with the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Time Warner Cable Field. The Hot Rods won game one 17-5. Wisconsin won game two 4-1.

GAME ONE RECAP: The Timber Rattlers had a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. But, the Hot Rods scored four times in the top of the third. Wisconsin got to within 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bowling Green scored six times in the sixth and seven times in the seventh to put this game away.

TWO OUTS: The four runs Bowling Green scored in the third inning and the seven runs they scored in the seventh inning all crossed home plate after two innings.

DEEP SIX: Mark Thomas drove in six runs for Bowling Green in game one. He hit a three-run homer in the third and a three-run double in the seventh.

GAME TWO RECAP: Khris Davis hit a home run in the bottom of the second inning to put the Rattlers up 1-0. Bowling Green rallied for a run in the top of the third. Wisconsin retook the lead with an RBI single by Cutter Dykstra. Two runs in the sixth inning in the sixth inning.

STRANDED SOME MORE: Wisconsin reliever Jon Pokorny entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fifth inning and the Rattlers leading 2-1. Right fielder Erik Miller tracked down a long fly to the gap in right-center to record the final out. Pokorny has inherited 19 runners this season. He has stranded 17.

CHANGES: There were three scoring changes after the games were completed on Wednesday. Scooter Gennett’s infield single in the first inning of game one was switched to an error. In game two, an error on first baseman Ryan Wiegand was switched to a double for Michael Marseco. Also in game two, a double for Ty Morrison was changed to a single and an error.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Earlier today, pitcher Jeremy Jeffress was added to the Timber Rattlers roster. Jeffress was the 1st round pick of the Brewers in the 2006 draft. He spent time with Huntsville and Brevard County last season, before being handed a 100-game suspension for violating the Minor League Drug Treatment and Prevention Program. Damon Krestalude has been placed on the disabled list.

HEY, NOW! YOU’RE AN ALL-STAR: The Midwest League announced the rosters for the 2010 All-Star Game on Tuesday morning. Wisconsin has placed four players on the Western Division squad, including two starters. Khris Davis was elected as a starter in the outfield. Scooter Gennett will be the starting second baseman in the game. Pitchers Nick Bucci and Jake Odorizzi have also been voted as members of the team. The game will be played at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana on June 22.

PROSPECTING: There are eight members of the active Timber Rattler roster who are rated as top 30 prospects in the Milwaukee system by Baseball America in their 2010 Prospect Handbook. Pitchers Eric Arnett (#4), Jake Odorizzi (#9) and Kyle Heckathorn (#10) are all rated in the top 10. Outfielder D’Vontrey Richardson (#18) is the only position player to make the list. Pitchers Jeremy Jeffress (#21), Del Howell (#22), Nick Bucci (#29), and Maverick Lasker (#30) are the other four players on the top 30 list.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Bowling Green Hot Rods are the Midwest League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2009, the Hot Rods were in the South Atlantic League. They finished their final season in the South Atlantic League with a 64-74 record. They were 34-36 in the first half and 30-38 in the second half. Bowling Green did not make the playoff in 2009. In 2010, the Hot Rods is 24-34. They are tied for sixth place in the Eastern Division and are 14.5 games behind first place Lake County. They are 12.5 games behind Great Lakes for the first half Eastern Division Wild Card. The Hot Rods are 3-4 in seven games against the Western Division. Bowling Green split two games with Clinton before the finale of that series was rained out. The Hot Rods went 1-2 in a three game set with Kane County.

2010 SEASON SERIES: These games are the first ever meetings between the Rattlers and Bowling Green. The series is even at 1-1.

CATCHING SOME RAYS: This series is the first time the Rattlers are facing an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays since the 2006 season, During that season, the Rays were affiliated with the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays.

NATIVE SON: Bowling Green starting pitcher Aaron Dott is from Green Lake, Wisconsin. Dott was the 31st round selection of the Rays in 2009. He was selected out of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Last season, Dott was 1-4 for the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New York-Penn League. So far in 2010, Dott is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA in four starts for the Hot Rods.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .247 as a team. They have scored 272 runs (4.6/game) and hit 28 home runs. The Hot Rods are hitting .256 as a team. They have scored 229 runs (3.9/game) and hit 25 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.51 while allowing a total of 299 runs (5.1/game) this season. Bowling Green pitchers have a team ERA of 3.92 while allowing 264 runs (4.6/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 96 errors. The Hot Rods defense has committed 59 errors. Wisconsin is 13-18 at home this season. Bowling Green is 11-17 in road games this season.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed five members of the current Hot Rods roster on their list of top 30 prospects in the Tampa Bay organization. Pitcher Alex Colome (#7) is the highest rated player. Pitchers Kyle Lobstein (#11), Wilking Rodriguez (#17), and Jason McEachern (#25) are joined on the list by outfielder Ty Morrison (#14).

BOWLING GREEN STARTING PITCHER: LHP Aaron Dott was selected in the 31st round by Tampa Bay during the 2009 draft out of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Dott was 1-4 with a 4.12ERA in 13 games (nine starts) for Hudson Valley in the New York-Penn League. He walked 16 and struck out 29 in 43-2/3 innings pitched for the Renegades. In his start prior to this evening, Dott lost to Kane County on June 4. He allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts over four innings. Tonight, Dott is making his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
