ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers lost 7-6 in 10 innings to the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The loss dropped Wisconsin to a season low 16 games under .500 at 22-38.
EARLY IN THE GAME: The Hot Rods scored a run in the top of the first and two more in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
DYKSTRA GOES DEEP: Cutter Dykstra launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to get Wisconsin back within a run.
BUT: The Hot Rods scored a run in the top of the fourth to go back up 4-2.
ON THE DOTT: Bowling Green Starting Pitcher Aaron Dott allowed two runs on one hit over five innings. He walked four, struck out three, and left with the lead and a chance to win.
A LITTLE HELP, A LITTLE CLUTCH: The Hot Rods committed three errors in the bottom of the sixth inning. The second error allowed a run to score. Then, Erik Miller doubled in two runs to give the Rattlers a 5-4 lead.
BUT: The Hot Rods scored a run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh to tie the game.
DAVIS GOES DEEP…AGAIN: Khris Davis started the Wisconsin eighth inning with a home run to give the Rattlers a 6-5 lead. Davis has eight homers this season and he has gone deep in two consecutive games.
BUT: Bowling Green tied the game in the top of the ninth on a two-out bunt single by Brett Nommensen that scored Ty Morrison from third. Morrison drove in the winning run from second with a two-out infield single in the top of the tenth.
EXTRA PAIN: Wisconsin is 0-7 in extra innings this season. They are now 3-16 in games decided by one run.
MR. HOWELL: Del Howell struck out six over 3-2/3 innings of relief work last night. That strikeout total set a new single game high as a professional for Howell.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Dayton Dragons are the Midwest League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. In 2009, the Dragons finished the season 59-80. They were 28-42 in the first half and 31-38 in the second half. The Dragons did not make the playoffs last season. In 2010, Dayton is 24-36 and in seventh place in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division. They are 4-6 in their last ten games. In their most recent series, the Dragons went 1-2 at Beloit. In their nine games against the Western Division, Dayton is 4-5.
2010 SEASON SERIES: These games will be the only three played between the Rattlers and Dragons during the 2010 regular season.
2009 SEASON SERIES: The Rattlers were 2-4 in six games against the Dragons in 2009. The Rattlers were 1-2 at Fifth Third Field and 1-2 at Time Warner Cable Field.
FAMILIAR FACES: Dayton’s manager is Todd Benzinger, who is back for his second year at the helm in Dayton. Benzinger was a member of the 1990 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds. Ken Griffey, Sr. is the hitting coach of the Dragons. He was a member of Cincinnati’s 1975 and 1976 World Series Championship teams. Tony Fossas, the pitching coach for the Dragons, was a Milwaukee Brewer in 1989 and 1990. He played for six other teams during a 12 year major league career.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .245 as a team. They have scored 278 runs (4.6/game) and hit 30 home runs. The Dragons are hitting .255 as a team. They have scored 245 runs (4.1/game) and hit 37 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.53 while allowing a total of 306 runs (5.1/game) this season. Dayton pitchers have a team ERA of 3.74 while allowing 280 runs (4.7/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 97 errors. The Dragons defense has committed 77 errors. PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed two members of the current Dragons roster on their list of top 30 prospects in the Cincinnati organization before the 2010 season. Infielder Didi Gregorius (#15) and pitcher J.C. Sulbaran (#25) are the pair of Reds prospects on the list.
DAYTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Jacob Johnson was the 11th round pick of the Reds in the 2009 draft out of Trinity Christian High School in Lake Worth, Florida. Johnson pitched for Cincinnati’s affiliate in the Gulf Coast League in 2009 and was 2-3 with a 2.83ERA in 11 games (nine starts). Johnson struck out 37 and walked 17 in 47-2/3 innings last season. In his start prior to this evening, Johnson beat Clinton on June 5. He allowed five runs (two earned) on three this over five innings with five strikeouts. Johnson has won his last two starts. Tonight, he is making his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
