July 16, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Rattlers and Lugnuts split a doubleheader. Wisconsin won game one 7-4. Lansing got the split with a 4-2 victory in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP: The Rattlers pounced early with a three run first inning. Scooter Gennett homered with one out. Later in the inning, Cutter Dykstra drove in a pair of runs with a single. The Lugnuts scored a run off starting pitcher Del Howell in the top of the third inning, but the Rattlers answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning on five consecutive one out hits. Hunter Morris, Dykstra, and Chris Dennis each had RBI singles in the sequence. The Lugnuts pulled to within 7-4 in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate, but Jon Pokorny got the final out for his eighth save of the season.

GAME TWO RECAP: The Lugnuts took a 4-0 lead by scoring a single run in the first, getting a two-run homer from Brad Glenn in the fourth, and scoring one more in the fifth. Michael Marseco’s two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth got the Rattlers to within 4-2. Wisconsin loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Lugnuts closer Steven Turnbull struck out the next three batters and retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh for his 20th save of the season.

DOUBLE DIP: Last night was the seventh doubleheader of 2010 for the Rattlers. Wisconsin has swept one twinbill, been swept in three, and split three.

SEVEN: Marseco has seven triples this season. Gennett has seven home runs this season. Kentrail Davis, who had two hits in the first game of the doubleheader, has seven multi-hit games (in 18 games) with the Timber Rattlers.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .254 as a team. They have scored 426 runs (4.8/game) and hit 51 home runs. The Lugnuts are hitting .262 as a team. They have scored 399 runs (4.5/game) and hit 44 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.42 while allowing a total of 440 runs (5.0/game) this season. Lansing pitchers have a team ERA of 3.89 while allowing a total of 400 runs (4.5/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 127 errors. The Lugnuts defense has committed 89 errors. Wisconsin is 21-25 in home games this season. Lansing is 24-20 away from home in 2010.

LANSING STARTING PITCHER: RHP Dave Sever was selected by the Blue Jays out of St. Louis University in the 16th round of the 2009 draft. In his final season with the Billikens, Sever led St. Louis in wins, ERA, and strikeouts. He is the career leader in wins with 22 at St. Louis. Sever made his pro debut with the Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League in 2009. He was 4-5 in 14 games (12 starts) with a 3.34ERA and 57 strikeouts in 67-1/3 innings pitched. In 2010, Sever is 2-6 with a 4.65ERA in 14 games (12 starts) for the Lugnuts. In his start prior to this evening, Sever allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in three innings on July 10 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. He has lost three straight starts. Tonight is the first time that Sever is facing the Timber Rattlers. This is also the first time he is pitching against an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
