June 5, 2010: Game Notes

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Lake County Captains beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-5 in 11 innings. The Rattlers grabbed a 5-0 lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. But, the Captains scored twice in the fourth, once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to tie the game. Casey Frawley drove in the winning run with a two out single in the bottom of the eleventh.

FIVE! The Rattlers scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Four of the runs came after there were two outs. Pete Fatse doubled in the first run with none out. Two outs later, D’Vontrey Richardson singled in a run and an error on the play allowed the second run across the plate. Scooter Gennett singled home a run. Then, Khris Davis doubled in two for the 5-0 lead.

A TIE IN THE CLUBHOUSE: Davis and Fatse are tied for the Timber Rattlers team lead in RBI. Both have 30 this season.

SLIPPED AWAY: After the Rattlers took the 5-0 lead, Del Howell walked two, gave up three hits, and allowed two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jake Odorizzi allowed a run in the sixth and a two-out, two-run double to Chun Chen and the Captains closed the gap.

HELPING HAND: Richardson threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. He has eight outfield assists this season. Only Michael Rockett of West Michigan (9) has more in the league in 2010.

A MAGNIFICENT 7-1/3: The Captains bullpen pitched 7-1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Lake County starting pitcher Trey Haley walked eight over 3-2/3 innings. Three Lake County relievers walked and gave up three hits over their final 7-1/3 frames.

THE GAME ENDER: Rattlers reliever Andy Sauter retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the eleventh. Then, Bo Greenwell double. A wild pitch moved him to third. Frawley’s single sent Greenwell home with the winning run.

RUNNING WILD: Wisconsin had four runners thrown out on the bases last night.

AVERT YOUR EYES: After last night, Wisconsin is now 0-6 in extra inning games and 3-15 in games decided by one run in 2010.

CAN’T TURN AWAY? Wisconsin is 4-7 in the first eleven games of their 13-game road trip. They have had the lead in six of the seven losses on the trip. In five of the six games in which the Rattlers have been in front, they have had the lead in the seventh inning or later.

ONE LAST LOOK: Last night was the twelfth time this season an opponent has beaten Wisconsin in its final at bat. It was the fourth time the Rattlers have been “walked off” in 2010.

VISITOR: Cleveland Indians infielder Andy Marte will be making a pair of rehabilitation starts for the Captains over the next two games.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Lake County Captains are the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. In 2009, the Captains were in the South Atlantic League. The Captains finished their final season in the South Atlantic League with a 71-66 record. They were 31-36 in the first half and 40-30 in the second half. The Captains did not make the playoff in 2009. In 2010, Lake County holds the best record in the Midwest League at 37-18. They are in first place in the Eastern Division and hold a four game lead over the Great Lakes Loons. In the Eastern Division Wild Card race, they are 6.5 games up on Lansing. The Captains are managed by Ted Kubiak, who was a member of the original Milwaukee Brewers team in 1970. Kubiak managed Cleveland’s Arizona League affiliate in 2009.

2010 SEASON SERIES: These games are the first ever meetings between the Rattlers and the Captains. Lake County has a 1-0 edge.

MEETING THE TRIBE: This series is the first time the Rattlers are facing an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Lake County is the first Midwest League affiliate of the Indians since 1988. Cleveland was affiliated with the Waterloo, Iowa franchise from 1979-1988.

A FEW TIE-INS: The Appleton Papermakers, a team that played in the Class-D Wisconsin State League from 1940-1953, were affiliated with the Indians in 1941, 1942, and 1946. Mike Garcia, a member of the Appleton Baseball Hall of Fame, pitched for the Papermakers in 1942 at the age of 18 and was 10-10 with a 3.94ERA. Garcia went on to win 142 games for the Indians from 1948-1959. Also, current Cleveland players Shin-Soo Choo, Luis Valbuena, and Asdrubal Cabrera played in the Midwest League for the Timber Rattlers when the team was affiliated with the Seattle Mariners.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST: The Timber Rattlers are hitting .250 as a team. They have scored 255 runs (4.6/game) and hit 26 home runs. The Captains are hitting .248 as a team. They have scored 259 runs (4.7/game) and hit 29 homers. Wisconsin pitchers have a team ERA of 4.32 while allowing a total of 272 runs (4.9/game) this season. Lake County pitchers have a team ERA of 3.49 while allowing 209 runs (3.8/game). The Timber Rattler defense has committed 90 errors. The Captains defense has committed 54 errors. Wisconsin is 8-18 in road games this season. Lake County is 19-11 at Classic Park this season.

PROSPECTING: Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook placed no members of the current Captains roster on their list of top 30 prospects in the Cleveland organization.

LAKE COUNTY STARTING PITCHER: RHP Clayton Cook was a 9th round selection in the 2008 draft out of Amarillo (TX) High School. He pitched for the Gulf Coast League Indians in 2008 and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League in 2009. Cook went 5-3 with a 2.79ERA in 14 games (all starts) for the scrappers and was named to the New York-Penn All-Star team. Cook is 1-4 with an ERA of 5.00 in nine starts for the Captains in 2010. In his start prior to this evening, Cook took the loss against Dayton on May 26. He allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits over 4-2/3 innings. Tonight is the first time he will face Wisconsin and an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
