Tuesday Odds & Ends

Larry Stone gets on the Mark Lowe bandwagon in the Seattle Times today. Unflappable Lowe lifts Mariners' spirits:

In 2005, his first full season, he had a 5.47 earned-run average for Class A Wisconsin, and learned a valuable lesson about himself during that up-and-down campaign: Coping with success is more problematic than coping with failure.

"It seemed like when I was having success, I backed off a little bit," he said. "I didn't run as hard, I didn't focus as much on what I was doing, because I was doing so well.

"When you're failing, you're trying to find answers, doing everything you can to get out of that slump. It's just something I've learned — when I have success, like I've had all season, I've pushed myself even harder, every single day, whether it's running, or playing catch, or focusing more when I'm on the mound."

Scott Hanson features Jeff Clement in the M's farm report: Clement flying through system:

Clement's rise has produced some big questions: With offseason acquisition Kenji Johjima handling the catching duties well in Seattle, where does Clement fit in? Will he be changing positions?

"I am willing to do whatever they want me to do, but I am positive that they want me to be a catcher, so that hasn't even been a thought in my mind to play another position," Clement said. "I am a catcher, and until they tell me something different that is what I am going to plan on being."

One other note from the Times, and it is in regard to former Timber Rattler Rafael Soriano:

Reliever Rafael Soriano was named Monday as one of six finalists for American League Comeback Player of the Year. Soriano, 1-1 with two saves and a 2.06 earned-run average in 43 appearances, sat out most of the past two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery to reconstruct ligaments in his right elbow.

The other five AL finalists are: Magglio Ordonez, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome, Curt Schilling, and Corey Patterson.

Not sure if you have clicked on the link to the Missions game story down in the system report post belowyet today, but if you haven't do so now and look over at the sidebar story to get a load of this news about a former Rattler closer:

Missions pitcher Eric O'Flaherty, who pitched 12/3 innings of relief in a 4-3 loss at Corpus Christi on Sunday night, was promoted to Triple-A Tacoma shortly after the game. He will be replaced by reliever Byron Embry, who the Seattle Mariners organization signed Friday.

Good luck, Eric. He started the season in Inland Empire and has moved up the ladder quickly.

Brian VanOchten of the Grand Rapids Press has a blog called Hit&Run. His post No Jeering in the Press Box caught my eye.

I've held my tongue long enough.I won't make this a big issue because it's something I've been able to work around for much of the summer, but the $1.3 million in offseason improvements made to Fifth Third Ballpark by the West Michigan Whitecaps included one of the strangest and stupidest mistakes in the history of the local minor-league baseball franchise.

In adding outdoor suite-level seating, the Whitecaps put two rows of seats directly in front of the press box, resulting in obstructed views for the media. It was done with full knowledge that it would interfere with the official scorer and the beat writer for The Press. It has been a source of frustration for me all season, but whenever I've aired those complaints to team officials I've gotten blank stares and garbled words that sound like someone has been gargling with a mouthful of marbles.

After getting nowhere, I simply gave up.

...
It got so bad early in the season that a Tiger official in town for a series at Fifth Third Ballpark remarked that he couldn't believe the Whitecaps would handicap the media like that. Tigers minor-league instructors have complained about it. A visiting radio announcer took one look at the setup and laughed. It can be awfully distracting, too, when the suite patrons stand up and turn around to watch the TV monitor in the press box or knock on the window to ask for the a Tigers score. That's rough on deadline. It happens all the time.

For the record, I was not the visiting radio announcer who laughed. Later in the post, he does mention that it's "no biggie." Just Low-A ball.

Also for the record, Brian should try working the press box in Beloit when it's 97 degrees. Or, the press box in Clinton that has people coming up to you and asking you to announce a birthday or to turn the music down on the PA system. Or, the press box in Dayton. Yes, Dayton. Oh, the facility is great and all, but they have tour guides stop by the Radio booths and tell the groups that Dayton's radio station does all 140 games, but only a few other teams in the Midwest League have radio stations that do raod games...while the visiting radio announcer is sitting right there. There are fourteen teams in the league. Only two don't have a radio station that travels to road games.

Sorry. Touched a nerve there. Ten deep breaths.

Monday in the MWL

Beloit 3, @Wisconsin 2 (11 inn.) -- Add this one to the list of tough losses for the Rattlers.

Burlington 9, @Dayton 0 -- Mario Lisson had a very good night for the Bees. So did Southern Door High School alum Erik Cordier.

Fort Wayne 5, @West Michigan 1 -- This can't be right? The Caps lost again?

South Bend 9, @Southwest Michigan 1 -- Justin Upton makes himself at home in Battle Creek.

Clinton 4, @Quad Cities 3 -- Apparently, either Jason Marquis nor Chris Carpenter were available for the SWING last night. But, Jake Rasner was available for the L-Kings.

Lansing 3, @Cedar Rapids 2 -- Geez, did any home teams win in the MWL last night?

@Kane County 4, Peoria 1 -- Oh. Nevermind.

If Monday's Game Were a Movie

it would be:

I haven't see this Paul Newman movie for years. The only thing that I remember about it is the final scene. The phone is ringing and Newman just sits there looking at it ring that monotonous Ma Bell ring that everyone's phone sounded like before AT&T got split up into the Baby Bells.

The phone just kept ringing and ringing and director Sidney Lumet may have been going for some kind of message with this symbolism, but all I could think was, "Paul, answer the DAMN PHONE!!!"

The Rattlers lost 3-2 in eleven innings tonight. Beloit scored their three runs on a balk, an error, and a wild pitch. Nobody picked up the phone tonight.

Get 'em tomorrow.

Back in the Toolbox

In the post below, I mentioned the Baseball America has been releasing their Best Tools on their website. The Rattlers didn't have any on the list, but there are plenty of former Rattlers on the Best Tools lists from High-A to Triple-A. These ranking are based on a vote that happened before a lot of the promotions and trade in the Mariner system. In 2001, Rattler outfielder Jamal Strong was named the Most Exciting Player in the Midwest League and he was gone to Inland Empire by June.

Mark Lowe: Best Breaking Ball (High-A, CAL)
Gary Thurman: Best Managerial Prospect (High-A, CAL)

Ryan Feierabend: Best Control (Double-A, TEX)
Oswaldo Navarro: Best Defensive Shortstop (Double-A, TEX)
Wladimir Balentien: Best Outfield Arm (Double-A, TEX)
Daren Brown: Best Managerial Prospect (Double-A, TEX)

Adam Jones: Best Defensive Outfielder (Triple-A, PCL)
Shin-soo Choo: Best Outfield Arm (Triple-A, PCL)

MWL Toolbox

Baseball America has been releasing their Best Tools (Hitting, Defense, Pitching) list for a couple of days now and they have gotten around to Low-A ball, which includes the Midwest League.

It's behind the subscriber wall, so I won't share all of it with you. A couple of notes:

No Rattlers in any of the categories

Cameron Maybin of West Michigan named most exciting Player.

Jay Bruce of Dayton was named best batting and best power prospect.

Nick Adenhart once of Cedar Rapids was named best pitching prospect.

Josh Johnson of Burlington was honored with best strike-zone judgement.

Oh, there are others, but I think that I'll go out on top with best strike-zone judgement.

Game Notes for 8/7

ABOUT SUNDAY: Johan Limonta hit a solo homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Timber Rattlers an 11-10 victory over the Snappers. The Rattlers rallied from 5-1 and 10-7 deficits for the win.

COMEBACK ABILITY: The Rattlers trailed 1-0, 5-1, and 10-7 in the game before coming back to win. The rally from the 5-1 deficit after the top of the third inning matched the biggest deficit the Rattlers have overcome this season.

BIG INNING: Wisconsin took a 7-5 lead with a six run bottom of the fourth. The Rattlers collected seven hits in the inning. Ron Garth’s two-out, two-run single broke a 5-5 tie.

GETTING MOORE: Rattler DH Adam Moore hit a homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to start Wisconsin’s third comeback of the game. The homer was Moore’s second in as many games and extended his hitting streak to seven games. He is 12-for-28 during his current streak.

MIDWEST LEAGUE FIRST: Kuo Hui Lo, who had three hits yesterday, hit his first Midwest League home run in the game. His second inning blast tied the game 1-1.

HOME RUN HAVEN: Before this series started, there had been 54 home runs hit in 57 games at Fox Cities Stadium. In the first two games between Wisconsin and Beloit in this series, there have been twelve home runs – six by each team.

SOMETHING ABOUT SUNDAY: Three of the last four regular season walk-off home runs at Fox Cities Stadium have been hit on a Sunday: TJ Bohn on April 27, 2003; Ron Garth on May 21, 2005; and Limonta yesterday. The other regular season game winning home run also happened during a day game: Matt Tuiasosopo on April 13, 2005.

SAME SCORE; DIFFERENT RESULT: The Snappers beat the Rattlers 11-10 earlier this season on an Erik Lis game winning home run at Pohlman Field on April 11.

SHORT STARTS: Nick Allen, the Rattler starting pitcher yesterday, lasted 4-2/3 innings. In the last ten games, Wisconsin starting pitchers have made it through five innings only four times.

DOUBLE DIGIT WIN: Sunday was the thirteenth time the Rattlers have allowed ten or more runs in a game. Wisconsin is now 1-12 in games in which they have allowed ten or more runs.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Eddie Morlan was drafted in the third round by the Twins in the 2003 draft out of Coral Park High School in Miami, Florida. Morlan was 4-4 in 10 starts with a 4.39ERA for the Snappers after going 2-0 with a 0.84ERA for Elizabethton in 2005. This season he has made 23 appearances (10 starts) for the Snappers. His last start was on August 2 and it was a loss to the Dayton Dragons. He allowed five runs on seven hits over 3-2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Morlan has made two relief appearances against Wisconsin this season. He has pitched five innings; has given up one run on three hits with eleven strikeouts; and has earned a save.

Sunday in the MWL

@Wisconsin 11, Beloit 10 -- Limonta plays the hero with a game winning homer.

@Quad Cities 5, Clinton 2 -- Did the L-Kings even have a chance with Mark Mulder starting and Tyler Greene hitting for the SWING?

@Dayton 5, Burlington 2 -- I don't know if this play has more to do with Bee luck or Dragon luck this season. Probably both. By the time Burlington catcher Brady Everett settled under a Chris Denove pop foul at the plate, the wind shifted and the ball dropped harmlessly fair in front of everybody. It then bounced foul, so no harm done. So you just know that Dayton would build the winning rally from that, don't cha?

@West Michigan 7, Fort Wayne 6 -- It's a good thing the Whitecaps won. I don't think they could have recovered from a two-game losing streak.

Lansing 7, @Cedar Rapids 5 -- Jordan Renz hit a pair of homers and drove in four, but the Kernels drop the game to the Lugs.

@Kane County 7, Peoria 4 -- Mazzaro masters the Chiefs.

@Southwest Michigan 13, South Bend 10 -- A C.O. Brown SLUGFEST?!

If Sunday's Game Were a Movie...

it would be:

If John Woo directed a baseball movie, it would have been like today's Wisconsin-Beloit game...Well, he'd have more slo-motion shots, a fly ball would need to be caught by an outfielder making a diving play over a few church pews, and -- let's be honest -- there would be a lot of gunfire and explosions. Man, I'd love to see that John Woo movie.

Today, the Rattlers played the Christian Slater role and the Snappers were Travolta. Wisconsin's comebacks were equal to the two comebacks Slater had in that movie. He was ejected out of a stealth bomber and left in a mineshaft in which a nuclear bomb goes off. He still manages to live, save the day, and bump off Travolta in a very satisfying way.

Johan Limonta finished off the Snappers in a very satisfying way today.

Game Notes for 8/6

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Snappers pounded the Rattlers 14-4. Erik Lis drove in six runs and Beloit had twenty hits in the game.

THREE HIT CLUB: Lis, William Luque, Edward Ovalle, and Matt Betsill all had three hits in the game.

BIG FLIES: Each team had three homers last night. Lis and Juan Portes had three run homers and Eli Tintor had a solo shot for the Snappers. Rattler catcher Adam Moore’s solo homer in the sixth was his first professional homer. Ron Garth’s solo homer in the eighth was his seventh of the season and he leads the Rattlers in homers. Chris Minaker’s two run home run in the third was his first Fox Cities Stadium homer.

DOWN EARLY: The first five Snapper batters of the game reached base against Rattler starting pitcher Paul Fagan. Lis and Tintor each had RBI singles with the bases loaded to put the Snappers up 2-0. After Wisconsin turned a 5-2-3 double play, Portes hit his homer and the Rattlers were down 5-0 before they ever got to the plate.

NOT A GOOD OMEN: The biggest deficit Wisconsin has rallied from this season is four runs. They have done that twice.

GREAT CROWD: Wisconsin had its biggest home attendance of the season last night. The crowd of 6,993 was the second highest attendance for a Rattler game at Fox Cities Stadium. The record is 7,722 on July 25, 2003.

IN FRONT OF MANY: The Rattlers have drawn more than 5,000 fans to a home game seven times this season. They are 3-4 in those seven games.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Relief pitcher Cory Koliscak is the newest member of the Rattlers. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Radford University in Virginia in 2005. Koliscak spent last season with Everett in the Northwest League. He started 2006 with the Mariners Arizona League affiliate.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Yohan Pino was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2004 out of Venezuela by the Twins. He was 9-2 with a 3.72ERA in 12 starts for Elizabethton in the Appalachian League in 2005. His first 34 appearances for the Snappers in 2006 were out of the bullpen and he was 8-2 with three saves in a relief role. Pino beat the Rattlers on July 28 at Pohlman Field. He allowed a lead off single to Chris Minaker in the top of the first inning and retired the next eighteen batters in a row. In his last appearance, Pino came out of the bullpen and allowed one run on five hits over 2-1/3 innings against Dayton at Pohlman Field on August 2.

Saturday in the MWL

Beloit 14, @Wisconsin 4 -- It must have been bad. As of noon, I couldn't find the story anywhere on RattlersReport.com or on the Post-Crescent sports site. If you must read about it, go HERE. The word "bludgeon" is appropriate.

@Dayton 4, Burlington 3 -- Only the Bees could lose to a pair of light hitters

@Quad Cities 6, Clinton 2 -- The SWING won and this was about the only thing that went wrong for them last night at JOD:
Fort Wayne 11, @West Michigan 2 -- Wizards keep winning.

@Cedar Rapids 4, Lansing 3 -- Kernels win with two in the ninth.

@Kane County 4, Peoria 2 -- Jeff Baisley hits homer number 20 and the Cougars win.

South Bend 8, @Southwest Michigan 3 -- That hot streak the D-Rays were on? Yeah. It's over.

Final Thought for Saturday Night...

Jerry Reinsdorf is a really nice guy.

If Saturday's Game Were a Movie...

it would be:

This one. Blogger isn't letting me post the movie poster and I don't know if I even want to have it on this site. I'm not even going to say it's name.

Why that movie? 6,993 at Fox Cities Stadium and the Rattlers were down 5-0 before they ever got a swing at the plate.

Complete box score HERE.

New Addition

Reliver Cory Koliscak has been added to the Rattler roster.

The Rattlers are no at a full roster.

Game Notes For 8/5

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers fell 6-4 to the Fort Wayne Wizards. Wisconsin had a 4-3 lead going into the top of the ninth inning. But, the Wizards scored three times off Austin Bibens-Dirkx for the comeback win. Fort Wayne took three of the four games in the series from the Rattlers.

INTO THE NINTH: The Rattlers had been 27-2 when leading after eight innings this season. But, a leadoff double by Jose Lobaton started the Wizard ninth inning last night. A bloop single by AJ Davidiuk tied the game. Mike Baxter’s two-out RBI double put the Wizards up 5-4 and Will Venable’s RBI triple capped the Wizard rally.

EVEN DOZEN: Wisconsin relievers have twelve blown saves this season after last night.

QUALITY TIME: Rattler starter Marwin Vega gave up three runs on eight hits for a statistical quality start. It was the first quality start by the Rattlers since Nick Allen’s start against South Bend on July 27.

BACK-AND-FORTH: Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on back-to-back RBI hits by Robby Hudson and Mike Saunders. The Wizards scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up 3-2. The Rattlers tied the game with a run in the sixth and took the 4-3 lead on another RBI by Saunders in the seventh.

SAUNDERS ON FIRE: Saunders extended his hitting streak to five games and is 7-for-19 during the streak. In the series with the Wizards, Saunders drove in four runs and scored three.

COOLED OFF: Eddy Hernandez started the series with the Wizards at .241. That was up from .217 at the end of the first half. Hernandez went 1-for-10 with six strikeouts against the Wizards.

MORE STRIKEOUT STUFF: Alex Gary went 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts last night. The Rattler outfielder has struck out 63 times in 126 at bats this season. Half of Gary’s at bats have ended in strikeouts this season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Beloit Snappers are the Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Beloit is currently 24-18 in the second half. They trail Western Division leading Quad Cities by one-half game and lead Cedar Rapids by 5-1/2 games for the Western Division Wild Card. The Snappers are 59-51 overall this season.

MILK PAIL SERIES ’06: The Rattlers and Snappers are playing for the Milk Pail Trophy once again this season. Wisconsin took two out of three from Beloit at Pohlman Field in a mid-April series. Wisconsin won game one 7-2. The Snappers won the second game 11-10 in twelve innings. Wisconsin got the victory in game three 7-1. Beloit swept a four game series at Pohlman Field to take a 5-2 lead in the season series. One win in this series will win the trophy for the Snappers. Wisconsin needs a series sweep to capture the Milk Pail.

CLOSE, TOO CLOSE: Since the Snappers became an affiliate of the Twins before the 2005 season, Beloit is 14-12 in the series against the Rattlers. Wisconsin and Beloit split sixteen games in the regular season (The Rattlers were 4-4 at Pohlman Field and 4-4 at Fox Cities Stadium.) The teams met in the 2005 Western Division Championship Series and the Rattlers won that series 2-1. This is Beloit’s first visit to Fox Cities Stadium since September 9, 2005.

PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA’s Top 30 list of Twin prospects has six members of the current Snapper roster on it. Shortstop Paul Kelly is the highest ranked Snapper at number 11. Pitcher Eddie Morlan checks in as the highest rated hurler at number 15. Others on the list are: infielder Juan Portes (#18), infielder Drew Thompson (#19), pitcher Adam Hawes (#28), and pitcher Alexander Smit (#30).

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Ryan Mullins was a 3rd round pick of the Twins in the 2005 draft out of Vanderbilt where he was a member of the first team All-SEC squad in his final season. Mullins was 3-0 with a 2.18ERA in eleven starts for Elizabethton in his first pro season. In his last start, Mullins got a no decision against the Rattlers at Pohlman Field on July 31. Mullins allowed four runs (two earned) over six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. He left with a 6-4 lead, but the Rattlers tied the game in the top of the eighth.

More on Lowe

Former Rattler Mark Lowe's scoreless streak since joining the Mariners is getting close to a Seattle record that is held by someone else with Rattler ties. M's Update; Lowe and behold

While Mark Lowe zeroes in on the Mariners' record for scoreless innings to start a career, a member of the club's minor league staff is cheering him on from afar.

Pat Rice, the Mariners' minor league pitching coordinator, holds the club record with 13 scoreless innings in 1991. He pitched 52/3 shutout innings in his major league debut on May 18 at Yankee Stadium and didn't allow a run until a relief appearance on June 5 when Pete Incaviglia hit a sacrifice fly at Detroit.

...

"He's had it way tougher than I had," Rice said Friday as he prepared to travel from Colorado Springs to Peoria, Ariz.

"It's kind of easy to have a good start and roll up some innings like I did. But he has had pressure situations almost every time and he's getting the job done.

"Although I guess you could consider my streak to be impressive just for the fact that I didn't have nearly as good of stuff as he has."

Pat's kidding. I think.

The money quotes:

"To be honest, if it was the middle of the season last year, I would have said I'd be surprised at how he's handled it," Rice said.

"But when he left spring training this year, he was prepared and this hasn't surprised me a bit.

"He found something at the end of spring training. Not only did his stuff get better and his pitches get better, but he knew it and felt it. He became more confident because of it."

Friday Night in the MWL

Fort Wayne 6, @ Wisconsin 4 -- The one that got away.

Quad Cities 8, @Lansing 0 (12 inn.) -- Is there a better way to break up a scoreless game than with eight runs in the twelfth?

8/04/2006

If Friday's game were a movie...

it would be:

Mainly for the ending. It looks like Franko is going to get away from the target with Reisman, Bowren, and Wladislaw. But, it doesn't end the way that it should have.

Kind of like tonight's 6-4 loss to the Wizards. Fort Wayne scores three in the ninth to pull out the win, which happened to be the twelfth blown save of the season by the Rattler bullpen.

Complete Friday Night Box Score HERE.

One note completely unrelated to the game tonight...While getting the link to tonight's movie...a movie that should not never in any way ever be touched by another filmaker ever...I came across the fact that a remake is in development...Updated to the current day...Please. Stop. Or it will turn out like the Admiral logo.

Avast, Matey. There be a bad re-imagining of a classic movie on the horizon.

Roster Moves

Outfielder Jairo Hernandez taken off the Rattler DL and transferred to Peoria (AZL)

Pitcher Harold Williams placed on temporarily inactive list.

Game Notes for 8/4

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Timber Rattlers broke a six game losing streak with a 6-2 win over the Wizards. Adam Moore had three hits and drove in two runs for the offense. Jose Escalona pitched five shutout innings for his sixth win of the season.

WHO WANTS MOORE? Moore had a pair of doubles, scored a run, and knocked in the final two runs of the game for the Rattlers. The Mariners sixth round pick out of Texas-Arlington is 9-for-20 during his current five game hitting streak.

DOUBLING UP: Chris Minaker, Jeff Flaig, and Travis Scott each had a pair of hits in the game.

SCORE FIRST; SCORE OFTEN: The Rattlers scored first for the first time in the series last night. When the Rattlers get the first run of the game, they are 25-21 this season.

WIZARD’S BANE: Escalona snapped a personal three game losing streak with the victory yesterday. He allowed five hits and walked a pair but struck out six without allowing a run. Escalona is 2-0 against Fort Wayne this season and gave up one run over ten innings against the Wizards this season.

FOUR OR LESS: Last night, four Rattler pitchers held their opponents to less than five runs for the fifty-second time this season. Wisconsin is 30-22 when they hold opponents under five runs.

CALL THEM THE BREEZE: Those four Rattler pitchers last night (Escalona, Roman Martinez, Austin Bibens-Dirkx, and Brian Kappel) combined to strikeout eleven Wizard batters in the game.

K-MACHINE: Kappel struck out two in his one inning of work to give him thirteen strikeouts over eleven innings in eleven appearances for the Rattlers. He had sixteen punchouts over 9-1/3 innings for Everett before his promotion to Wisconsin.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Stevie Delabar was a 29th round pick of the Padres as a draft-and-follow out of Volunteer State (TN) Junior College in the 2003 draft. He spent all of last season with Eugene in the Northwest League and was 4-6 in sixteen starts with an ERA of 4.76. Delabar will be making his 22nd start of the season for the Wizards tonight. In his last start, on July 30, against Southwest Michigan, Delabar got a no decision. He pitched 5-2/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Delabar, who has won three straight decisions, lost to the Rattlers at Memorial Stadium on April 28. Wisconsin got to him for five runs (one earned) on six hits over 3-2/3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

Odds & Ends for Friday

A couple from the Seattle Times today to get you ready for the big series with Oakland.

Lots of stuff from JJ Putz (WI '00) at Young relievers help M's join AL West race:

"I learned from Nellie and Arthur and Shiggy, as well as Eddie," Putz said, referring to Jeff Nelson, Arthur Rhodes and Shigetoshi Hasegawa, all veterans, all gone.

"Eddie [Guardado] was with our whole group essentially and helped us, mentally more than anything. "Believe me, all of them were raucous out in the pen. Like Eddie, they'd clown around out there just like he does in the clubhouse before or after games. But only in the early innings. Later on, it was serious time. For every one of them, it was the same."

...

In a sense, Guardado's legacy also includes Mark Lowe, the youngster who came from Class AA and has been nothing but magic since. Lowe replaced Guardado in the bullpen.

"How does that kid do it?" Putz ponders the question. "He may not know himself. And we don't want him sitting around trying to figure it out. All he's got to do is keep doing it."

Also, here is Larry Stone's column Suddenly wild and wide-open AL West waits to be won

Chris Snelling (WI '00) is featured in the subscribers only Baseball America Triple-A report. Here are a few quote. (Not too many though. Don't want to lose my subscription to BA)

No matter how many times Snelling has had to go through rehabilitation--and he says he’s lost count--it never gets easier.

“I honestly think you lose your mind during rehab. You live in Arizona in the summer months where it’s 110 degrees in the shade and it does something to your mind,” Snelling explained.

“You do weird things. One time I had a competition with people voting to see who was the ugliest guy in the clubhouse. Who would ever take time to do that?

...

“I can’t tell you how many people have asked me why I haven’t quit. Some come right out and ask me, ‘Stupid, what are you doing?,’ “ Snelling said.

“People in Australia who don’t even know anything about baseball ask since I’ve been hurt so much why am I still doing it. I’ve learned that you’re not going to change people’s minds, but you have to make sure they don’t put any doubt in your mind.

And that is why Snelling has always been one of my favorite former Rattlers.

Interesting story about Barbaro Garbey in the Peoria Journal-Star today, First to defect to U.S. from Cuba national team stays realistic about Castro illness Here are a few excerpts, but please read the whole thing.

PEORIA - Reports of Fidel Castro's shaky health excite Cubans hoping to see leadership changes on the communist island.

Peoria Chiefs hitting coach Barbaro Garbey, the first player ever to defect from Castro's beloved national baseball team, is more reserved.

"He is still alive," Garbey said before Thursday's game at O'Brien Field, reacting to reports of Cubans celebrating in Miami.

"I don't know why people are jumping around," Garbey said. "We hope that the system changes, a little more democracy. But it will be very difficult to change that system in Cuba - Fidel, Raul (Castro's brother) or whoever is coming from the Communist Party, it's going to be the same thing."

...

Garbey made history in 1980 when he spurned Castro to play baseball in the United States. He was among 125,000 Cubans welcomed to the U.S. as part of the Mariel Boatlift.
...

Garbey's six siblings remain in Cuba. That includes brother Rolando, a two-time Olympic boxing medalist (silver in 1968, bronze in 1976) who now is a coach with the national boxing team, and sister Marcia, who placed fourth in the Olympic long jump in 1972.

Phone conversations keep Garbey up to date on his siblings' families, their jobs and other details. He sends money back to family in the cash-strapped nation. But Garbey knows to never bring up Castro or
politics.

"You can't talk like that on the phone," Garbey said. "The system in Cuba is, you have to be quiet. Don't say anything, don't get in trouble. The freedom of speech is not there. You have to say what they want to hear."

When I was with the Dukes in the Northern League Jackie Hernandez was the hitting coach and Mike Cuellar was the pitching coach. Both are from Cuba. The subject of Cuba came up one day and Jackie was talking about wanting to go back to see his family and someone asked about Castro. Mike very plainly said, "****, Castro!" I think you can fill in the ****.

Twins GM Terry Ryan stopped by Pohlman Field the other day. Twins' GM Ryan studies Snappers

“I think it's important that we get down to see the minor league affiliates, whether it's Low-A or Triple-A,” Ryan said. “It doesn't matter because ultimately these guys are going to end up being the people up there that serve us and help us get to where we want to get.”

The Twins-Snappers affiliation is in its second season, and on the field, it's been a huge success. Beloit was in the playoffs last season as a second-half wild card, and this summer the Snappers are once again in a playoff chase. Several up-and-coming players in the Twins' organization are currently playing at Pohlman Field.

More later. Gotta finish the game notes and take care of a few things that keep me employed.

If Thursday's Game Were a Movie...

it would be:

The first time I saw Real Genius, I thought: Hey, that's a fun little movie. I'll have to see it again.

I had the same reaction after tonight's 6-2 Rattler win over the Wizards. That was a fun game. Can't wait to see it again.

Complete Box Score HERE.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Wizards routed the Rattlers 14-3. David Freese drove in five runs to lead the way for the Fort Wayne offense. Ron Garth knocked in all three Rattler runs.

FIRST WIN: Fort Wayne starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc allowed three runs over five innings for his first Midwest League win in his second start for the Wizards.

LONG SAVE: Grant Varnell pitched four shutout innings for his first save of the season.

FIRST OUT OF THE GATE: The first four batters of the game reached base against Rattler starting pitcher David Asher. Will Venable drove in the first run of the game with a single. Freese followed with a two-run double and scored later in the inning on a single by Daryl Jones for a 4-0 lead before the Rattlers ever took a swing.

SEVEN IN THE FOURTH: The first four Wizard hitters of the fourth inning reached against Asher to knock him out of the game. Juan Colon entered and promptly gave up another two-run double to Freese. Colon threw a wild pitch that allowed Freese to score all the way from second and it was 10-3. Later in the inning, Mike Sansoe drove in a pair of runs with a single for a 12-3 lead.

WELCOME BACK: In his first appearance off the DL, Wisconsin reliever Ruben Flores walked a batter and struck out three in a scoreless inning.

NEW LEADER: Garth took over sole possession of the Timber Rattler home run lead with his sixth of the season. Garth’s two run shot in the bottom of the third pulled the Rattlers to within 5-3. Garth’s three RBI last night gives him 38 on the season and he is tied with Luis Valbuena, who has been promoted to Inland Empire, for the team lead in that category.

SEASON LOW: The loss yesterday dropped the Rattlers to 39-71 on the season. This is a season low thirty-two games under .500 for the season.

THROUGH THE ROTATION: In the last five games, Wisconsin starting pitchers have lasted a total of 22-1/3 innings, a average of less than five innings a start.

UNFRIENDLY CONFINES: The Rattlers are 20-34 at Fox Cities Stadium this season.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Greg Burke was signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent off the roster of the Atlantic City Surf of the Independent Atlantic League. Burke signed with the Surf after going undrafted out of Duke University in 2005. He was 5-9 with a 5.90 ERA in his final season with the Blue Devils. In his first year with the Surf, Burke went 1-2 with a 3.70ERA in twenty-five games (one start). He began 2006 with Lake Elsinore, the California League affiliate of the Padres, and went 2-1 with a 5.79ERA in twelve relief appearances. His first game for the Wizards was on May 14 and he has made eighteen appearances (eleven starts). His last start was a no decision against the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays on July 29. Burke got a no decision for a seven inning performance in which he allowed two runs on nine hits without a walk and with seven strikeouts. This is his first appearance against the Timber Rattlers.

Working in the Minors (PT II)

Last week, he was on the Tacoma groundscrew. This week, Patrick Brown writes about selling peanuts in the stands for the Boise Hawks.

It is another edition of his Working in the Minors series at milb.com.

One of the first things I noticed was how hot it was -- 96 degrees, to be exact. Right then I knew it was going to be a long night at the ballpark, at least outside of the friendly confines of the press box.

As we made our way back to the vending station to load up, there was a slight burning sensation in my legs. That was good to know, since I only had about 3,000 trips up and down the stairs left to go.

Right before we hit the stands, Rad gave me advice every vendor should appreciate.

"Hydration is key," he said. "Stay hydrated, or die."

I give myself a similar peptalk at the start of every off-season.

"Selling is the key. Keep selling or you're fired."

"Peanuts!" I yelled. "Only two-seventy-five! Who wants some Peanuts?
Two-seventy-five!"

Immediately a hand went up, and I responded with a smile and a bag of peanuts. She responded by handing me a $20 bill. That already cleaned out 17 of my singles. Ouch.

Please, pay with the smallest bill, next time.
It turns out that I sold 46 bags, making a profit of $126.50. Not bad for the first day on the job. I made $11 in tips, five of which came from the quarters patrons let me keep. Seriously, their quarters went a long way, and I was thankful.

Just a guess, but he probably made more selling peanuts than he did writing the article. But, it's not about the money:

In the end, while the money made was significant, it's peanuts compared to the pleasure of giving family and friends the experience of enjoying a ballgame together.

Yep, that's why we all do this.

Wednesday in the MWL

Fort Wayne 14, @Wisconsin 3 -- Must..refrain...from...Football...reference.

If Wednesday's Game Were a Movie...

it would be:
Any of those All-Star Disaster Flicks from the 70's, but this one fits the bill tonight. That seven run fourth inning that put the game out of reach tonight started with a single. Then, another single. Then, another single. Then, another single. Pitching change. Double. Wild pitch. Runner scored from second and there was no using the elevator to get out of this one.

Get 'em tomorrow.

Game Notes for 8/1

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Wizards held off the Rattlers 8-7. Both teams scored five runs in the second inning. The Wizards got a homer from David Freese in the top of the third and a home run from Daryl Jones in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. Wisconsin got to within 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth, but John Madden got his twelfth save of the season.

PAIR OF FIVES: Fort Wayne jumped to the early lead with RBIs from Jones, AJ Davidiuk, and Jodam Rivera. Josh Alley smacked a two-run double off Rattler starting pitcher Nick Allen for the five run outburst. Wisconsin rallied in the bottom of the second against Jarrett Gardner on RBI singles from Travis Scott, Jeff Flaig, and Eddy Hernandez; an error by Gardner; and a sacrifice fly by Mike Saunders.

NEW HIGH: Allen struck out five Wizards over five innings last night. His previous professional high for strikeouts in a game was four. Allen had struck out four opponents in a game nine times in his career.

END OF THE LINE: Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up a two-out run in the top of the eighth inning and his scoreless streak ended at thirteen innings. An RBI double by Will Venable gave the Wizards an 8-6 lead.

BAM! POW! WHOOSH! WIFF! Madden struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth inning. Then, Chris Minaker (BAM!) doubled off the wall. Next, Saunders (POW!) drove in Minaker with a single. Saunders (WHOOSH!) stole second to get into scoring position. But, Madden (WIFF!) struck out Ron Garth to end the game.

WILD THING: Reliever Harold Williams walked four batters last night. He continues to lead the Midwest League in walks with 72.

DRIVE FOR FIVE: Last night, the Rattlers lost their fifth game in a row. Including their current streak, Wisconsin has had four losing streaks of at least five games.

SEASON LOW: The loss yesterday dropped the Rattlers to 39-70 on the season. This is a season low thirty-one games under .500 for the season.

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Wade LeBlanc was the 2nd round pick of the Padres in the 2006 draft out of Alabama. LeBlanc was 11-1 with a 2.92ERA for the Crimson Tide in his final season at Alabama. He went 1-0 with a 4.29ERA in seven appearances for Eugene in the Northwest League after signing with the Padres. His first Midwest League start was on July 28 against Southwest Michigan. He worked four shutout innings and allowed four hits while striking out seven. This is LeBlanc’s first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Mariners.

New Logo

No. Not for the Rattlers.

I saw this at The Wisconsin Sports Bar and a my first reaction was, "This is a joke. Right?"

It's not a joke.

Milwaukee, WI—The Milwaukee Admirals unveiled their new logo, home and road jerseys, and a new color scheme featuring black, silver, and ice blue today at a party at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage on the Summerfest Grounds.

“We are extremely excited to reveal our new look,” said Admirals Owner and CEO Harris Turer. “This is a new era for the Milwaukee Admirals and we want to start it off in a tremendous way on the 1st. We are thrilled to share this big night with all of our fans and sponsors.”
I remember going to the MECCA and watching the Admirals take on IHL rivals like the Flint Spirits and the Saginaw Gears with a perfectly serviceable logo.

Two questions: Must every new logo have black in it? What do you think of when you see this?

I'm thinking more along the lines of Pirates, not admirals. But, there is a reason why this admiral has no skin or facial features and leers at you through hollow, sunken eye sockets:

The Admirals new logo is actually and aged version of the team’s logo from the late 1970’s, a short young lad, who was lost in the waters of Lake Michigan back after the 1981 season and was recently found.

The only thing that managed to keep him alive all these years was his fighting spirit. In fact, after one of his legs fell off, he used it as a hockey stick to hone his skills. After over 25 years of being underwater, the red white and blue uniform had faded to the black, silver, and ice blue, and had turned his fresh young face into a skull.

Despite all of his changes, his fighting spirit never wavered and that relentless spirit and tireless work ethic have given us our new battle cry: Never Say Die!

Gaaaarrrrrr, but I hate to do this to ye, laddie...Shiver me timbers, I think that someone is trying too hard.

It's great that there is a backstory about why the guy is a skull now and everything. But, a logo shouldn't need a description or a backstory.

To stay in Milwaukee for a moment, did this logo need a backstory?

Did this logo need a backstory?

Roster Moves 8/2 (UPDATED)

Catcher Nick Prosise was given his release today.

Infielder Juan Guzman was sent up to Tacoma.

Curt Ledbetter rejoins the Rattlers from Everett.

That leaves one roster spot open for right now.

There may be one more move before the game tonight.

This may be the poorest Hemmingway impression. Ever.

I've done better. Will try again. Someday.

UPDATE: If I had waited 30 minutes, I would not have needed an update.

Game Notes for 8/1

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Beloit Snappers beat the Rattlers 7-6 for a four game sweep of Wisconsin at Pohlman Field. Eli Tintor hit a lead off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie. David Shinskie pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his ninth save.

JUMPING AHEAD: The Rattlers scored three runs in the first inning against Snapper starting pitcher Ryan Mullins. Adam Moore drove in the first run of the game with a single. Kuo Hui Lo followed with a two-un single and the Rattlers were up 3-0 before the Snappers got to hit.

FALLING BEHIND: But, the Snappers scored twice in the bottom of the first against Rattler starter Paul Fagan. Then, after a Mike Saunders sacrifice fly padded the Rattler lead to 4-2 in the top of the second, the Snappers scored three times in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead.

BACK TO EVEN: Beloit added a run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-4. Eddy Hernandez hammered a two-run homer with one out in the top of the eighth to tie the game 6-6. Hernandez has hit three homers in the second half and all three have either tied the game or put the Rattlers in front.

FULL COUNT: Tintor lifted a 3-2 pitch from Roman Martinez over the left field wall for what turned out to be the game winning homer in the bottom of the eighth.

SLOPPY DEFENSE: The teams combined for seven errors last night: Beloit (4), Wisconsin (3).

JULY ON THE ROAD: The Rattlers were 4-13 away from Fox Cities Stadium last month.

MILK PAIL STANDINGS: By sweeping the series from the Rattlers, Beloit has taken a commanding 5-2 lead in the Milk Pail Series over the Rattlers. Beloit needs to win only one of the remaining four games between the teams to claim the Milk Pail trophy for the second year in a row.

SEASON LOW: The loss yesterday dropped the Rattlers to 39-69 on the season. This is a season low twenty-nine games under .500 for the season.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The Fort Wayne Wizards are the Midwest League affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The Wizards did not qualify for the playoffs in the first half. They are currently 20-18 and lead the Dayton Dragons by ½ game for the second half wild card spot in the Eastern Division. Fort Wayne is 51-54 overall this season. The Wizards are managed by former Milwaukee Brewer Randy Ready.

VS. WIZARDS IN ’06: The Rattlers took three of four from the Wizards at Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne in a series from April 25-28. Fort Wayne won the first game of the series 13-4. The Rattlers won the final three games of the series by scores of 7-3, 11-6, and 6-3.

PROSPECTING: BASEBALL AMERICA’s Top 30 list of Padre prospects has two current members of the Wizards on it. However, Matt Bush (#13) and Kyle Blanks (#15) are both on the disabled list. Two other members of the list pitchers Joel Santo (#16) and Fabian Jimenez (#29) were recently traded to the Chicago Cubs organization. The Wizards have five members of the 2006 Padre draft class on their current roster. Pitchers Wade LeBlanc (2nd round) and Nathan Culp (4th) are joined by infielders David Freese (9th) and AJ Davidiuk (29th) and outfielder Michael Campbell (20th).

OPPOSING STARTING PITCHER: Jarrett Gardner was signed by the Padres off the roster of the Lincoln Saltdogs of the independent American Association and sent to Fort Wayne on June 30. He was originally a 19th round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox out of Arkansas in 2003. He was 22-19 with a 4.03ERA in 67 games (55 starts) in the Red Sox organization. Gardner was 2-2 with a 2.38 ERA for the Saltdogs before signing with the Padres. He beat Clinton at Memorial Stadium in his last start. On July 27, he allowed one run on five hits over seven innings to beat the LumberKings. This is his first appearance against the Rattlers and against an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

Odds & Ends:

Seattle Times has the M's Farm Report up and the lead item is about former Rattler Bryan LaHair:

TACOMA — Bryan LaHair was never concerned that, as a 39th-round draft pick, he might get less of chance than a higher-round pick to prove himself.

"To be honest, I never felt that way," said the Tacoma Rainiers' first baseman/outfielder, who has risen from Class A to Class AAA in less than a year. "I always felt that everyone gets an opportunity. Some sign for more than others, but once you get on the field, it's time to showcase your skills.

Down in the team capsules of the M's Farm Report, there is the latest news on #1 pick Brandon Morrow and #3 pick Tony Butler of Oak Creek.

In today's Mariner System Report Post, there is a mention of the tie-dye uniforms in which Everett is 3-0. Here's a picture from the AquaSox Website of Jeff Clement in one of those uniforms from 2005:

Groovy. Now, take a journey to the center of the mind.

Monday in the MWL

@Beloit 7, Wisconsin 6 -- Eli Tintor was the villian. That was a Snapper sweep in case you were paying attention.

@Lansing 4, Burlington 3 -- Bees blew a lead going into the bottom of the ninth for the third night in a row.

Cedar Rapids 10, @South Bend 7 -- The Hawks couldn't hold a lead either.

Dayton 3, @Peoria 1 -- Dragons score three in the ninth for the win over the Chiefs. The rally blew a nice start for rehabbing Wade Miller of Peoria.

@Kane County 11, Quad Cities 7 -- Trey Shields was undefeated in July after his win last night.

@Fort Wayne 11, Southwest Michigan 4 -- Wizards skipped BP yesterday and it helped?

West Michigan 7, @Clinton 0 -- Win #71 for the Whitecaps. Loss #75 for the L-Kings, who have also lost nine in a row.

If Sunday's Game Were a Movie...

it would be:

This is the Pink Panther movie where Chief Inspector Dreyfus goes completely crazy and sets out to kill Clouseau. Through luck and some fumbling around, Clouseau survives.
